* April 13 – Mamiya Rinzō, Japanese explorer of Sakhalin ( b. 1775 )

The Japanese say that it was Mamiya Rinzō who really discovered the Strait of Tartary in 1809.

In Japan, the strait is named after Mamiya Rinzō, who traveled to the strait in 1808 whereof the name was introduced by Philipp Franz von Siebold in his book Nippon: Archiv zur Beschreibung von Japan ( 1832 – 54 ).

Not knowing about the efforts of Japanese navigator Mamiya Rinzō who explored the same area forty years earlier, the Russians took Nevelskoy's report as the first proof that Sakhalin is indeed an island.

The fact that it is not connected was conclusively established by Mamiya Rinzō, who explored and mapped Sakhalin in 1809 and definitively recorded by Russian navigator Gennady Nevelskoy in 1849.

There are more than ten monuments at Cape Sōya, including the Monument of the Northernmost Point of Japan, the Tower of Prayer ( a memorial of Korean Air Lines Flight 007, 1983 ), a statue of Mamiya Rinzō, the Monument of Peace ( a memorial of USS Wahoo ), and others.

Sakhalin is separated from the mainland by the narrow and shallow Mamiya Strait or Strait of Tartary, which often freezes in winter in its narrower part, and from Hokkaidō, ( Japan ) by the Soya Strait or La Pérouse Strait.

Strait of Tartary ( Gulf of Tartary, Gulf of Tatary, Tatar Strait, Tartar Strait, Strait of Tartar, also Chinese: 韃靼海峽, Japanese:, Mamiya Strait, Russian Татарский пролив ) is a strait in the Pacific Ocean dividing the Russian island of Sakhalin from mainland Asia ( South-East Russia ), connecting the Sea of Okhotsk on the north with the Sea of Japan on the south.

Mamiya Rinzō's journey of 1808 was little known to Europeans.

This has secured their market position, with nearly all of their previous medium format camera competition going through sale ( Mamiya ), closure ( Contax, Bronica, Exakta 66, Kiev ), or greatly reduced market presence ( Rollei, Pentax ( which was also sold, to Hoya )), and other medium format digital back makers being faced with accordingly restricted markets.

Vertical shutters became very common in the 1980s ( though Konica, Mamiya, and Copal first pioneered their use in the 1950s and 1960s, and are almost exclusively used for new cameras.

Certain Mamiya medium-format SLRs, discontinued camera systems such as the Kowa 6 and a few other camera models also used between-the-lens leaf shutters in their lens systems.
