An important defended Roman settlement named Manduessedum existed at Mancetter near the site of modern day Atherstone, and the Roman road, the Watling Street ( now known as the A5 ) ran through the town.

Roads are also likely to have led via the known Roman settlements at Castle Bromwich and Grimstock Hill near Coleshill to Manduessedum ( Mancetter ), and to the fort at Greensforge near Kinver.

Plausible suggestions include Manduessedum ( Mancetter ), near Atherstone in Warwickshire, a site close to High Cross in Leicestershire, and a small dip at Cuttle Mill, two miles south-east of Lactodorum ( Towcester ) in Northamptonshire.

The historian, Dr Graham Webster has suggested it took place near Manduessedum (" the place of the war chariots "), modern day Mancetter and military finds of armour and military coinage relating to the 14th Legion, whom Tacitus records formed part of Suetonius ' army, have been found in the region, giving weight to Webster's hypothesis.

The resulting Battle of Watling Street took place at an unidentified location in a defile with a wood behind him, probably in the West Midlands somewhere along Watling Street-High Cross in Leicestershire and Manduessedum near the modern day town of Atherstone in Warwickshire have been suggested-where Roman tactics and discipline triumphed over British numbers.

It is believed by some historians that the rebel Queen of the Britons, Boudica was defeated at the Battle of Watling Street by the Romans in her final battle near Manduessedum.

Other significant Roman settlements included Tripontium near Rugby and Manduessedum near Atherstone.

The area around Manduessedum is known to have had an extensive pottery industry, which extended to near what is now Nuneaton, the remains of up to thirty pottery kilns having been found in this area.

Manduessedum developed into a civilian settlement and was the centre of a pottery making industry.

Around the station grew the settlement of Manduessedum.

Atherstone itself has a population of 8, 293 ( 2001 census ), the population of its urban area which includes Mancetter is 10, 742.

The surviving inventories from 16th-century Mancetter provide a fascinating glimpse into Atherstone ’ s Elizabethan merchants and traders, before the town was economically overshadowed by the bustling city of Coventry.

Witherley village is on the opposite bank of the river in Leicestershire, whilst the village of Mancetter is contiguous with Atherstone to the southeast.

Mancetter is a village and civil parish on the outskirts of Atherstone in North Warwickshire, at the crossing of Watling Street over the River Anker.

Today it is known as Mancetter, located in the English county of Warwickshire.

There is no evidence to support this ; other theories for the location of the battlefield include Mancetter in Warwickshire and Kings Cross in London.
