Mapleson returned in 1887 and 1889, but The Times commented that the repertoire comprised " works that had long ceased to attract a large public, the singers were exclusively of second-rate quality, and the standard of performance was extremely low ".

Santley appeared in English opera for Mapleson at Her Majesty's Theatre in the 1860 – 61 season.

Her Majesty's remained closed, and in 1869 Mapleson was drawn into a merger with the Royal Italian Opera.

Mapleson won Santley back for his own Italian opera company, and in the 1862-63 season at Majesty's, he performed in Il trovatore ( as Di Luna ), The Marriage of Figaro ( as Almaviva ) and Les Huguenots ( as de Nevers ).

In the autumn, after the Worcester and Norwich festivals, Santley joined the Mapleson company's annual tour, beginning in Dublin.

Hall and his associates also released an important collection of historic sound recordings, The Mapleson Cylinders, which captured the singing of Metropolitan Opera stars of the early twentieth century.

Only a few Mapleson Cylinders, primitive recordings made privately during actual performances at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1901, exist to give us a faint souvenir of him at work.

Eames ' voice was also captured ' live ' during an actual performance at the Met in 1903, on some primitive recordings which have become known as the Mapleson Cylinders.

Once the 1862-63 season was over, Santley paid a visit to Paris and saw Mme Carvalho perform in Gounod's Faust, which Mapleson had obtained for the 1863 season in London.

As a result of a dispute over the rent between Dudley and Mapleson, and a decline in the popularity of ballet, the theatre remained dark until 1874, when it was sold to a Revivalist Christian group for £ 31, 000.

From the opera in Paris he was engaged by Mapleson for the season of 1865, and made his London debut in Les Huguenots.

Mapleson was employed by the Met as a violinist and music librarian.

These unique acoustic documents, known as the Mapleson Cylinders, preserve a unique audio picture of the early Met, and are the only known extant recordings of some renowned performers including the tenor Jean de Reszke and the dramatic soprano Milka Ternina.

Mapleson mounted a new opera, George Alexander Macfarren's Robin Hood, featuring a cast led by Sims Reeves and stage-debutante Helen Lemmens-Sherrington, under the direction of Charles Hallé.

From 1862 to 1867, the theatre was managed by James Henry Mapleson, presenting Italian, French and German opera, including the British premières of La forza del destino, Médée, Faust and The Merry Wives of Windsor, and promoting such singers as Mario, Giulia Grisi, De Murska, Thérèse Tietjens, Antonio Giuglini, Charles Santley and Christine Nilsson.

With the destruction of the theatre, Mapleson took his company to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane.

The three seasons following were given to opera with the Mapleson company, and to concerts and festivals in great variety.

Her father, unable to bear the grief of his loss, and feeling adrift in a foreign country, returned to his native France for 16 years, with only one visit back to Philadelphia.

Her health broke under the stress of the 17-hour work day and she returned home in April 1839.

" Her boss said she was " not worth a sixpence " and returned her to Brodess, who tried unsuccessfully to sell her.

Her daughter returned to Austria in a prisoner exchange, married and died childless in 1851.

Her father returned to England as well.
