A number of Islamic writers and the 13th century Italian Marco Polo describe how this was obtained by sublimation from zinc ores and condensed onto clay or iron bars, archaeological examples of which have been identified at Kush in Iran.

Marco Polo brought some glazes back to Italy in the 13th century.

During the era after the war, later called the Pax Mongolica, adventurous Westerners such as Marco Polo travelled all the way to China and brought the first reports of its wonders to Europe.

Stories of kites were first brought to Europe by Marco Polo towards the end of the 13th century, and kites were brought back by sailors from Japan and Malaysia in the 16th and 17th centuries.

One theory, possibly the most well known but also the most criticized, comes from the observations from Marco Polo during his travels to the Orient.

The story of Cardinal Ammanati that he meant to take the name Formosus II (" handsome "), but was persuaded not to, is more often repeated than the story that he was dissuaded from Marcus, being Venetian and the Cardinal of San Marco, because it was also the war-cry of Venice.

It has also been claimed that, in the Yuan Dynasty, Kublai Khan enjoyed ice cream and kept it a royal secret until Marco Polo visited China and took the technique of making ice cream to Italy.

Philip Neri, founder of the Oratorians, a Florentine who had been educated by the San Marco Dominicans, also defended Savonarola's memory.

There is also a museum dedicated to her in Marco de Canaveses, Portugal called " Museu Municipal Carmen Miranda ", with various photos and one of the famous hats.

The Travels of Marco Polo, where Polo records his journey along the Silk Road, describes Samarkand as a " a very large and splendid city ..." Here also is related the story of a Christian church in Samarkand, which miraculously remained standing after a portion of its central supporting column was removed.
