A number of Islamic writers and the 13th century Italian Marco Polo describe how this was obtained by sublimation from zinc ores and condensed onto clay or iron bars, archaeological examples of which have been identified at Kush in Iran.

Marco Polo brought some glazes back to Italy in the 13th century.

During the era after the war, later called the Pax Mongolica, adventurous Westerners such as Marco Polo travelled all the way to China and brought the first reports of its wonders to Europe.

Stories of kites were first brought to Europe by Marco Polo towards the end of the 13th century, and kites were brought back by sailors from Japan and Malaysia in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Marco Polo was not the first Westerner to travel to the Orient and return with amazing stories of this different culture, but his accounts published in the late 13th and early 14th centuries were the first to be widely read throughout Europe.

Over a period of thirty years, he visited most of the known Islamic world as well as many non-Muslim lands ; his journeys including trips to North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa, Southern Europe and Eastern Europe in the West, and to the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and China in the East, a distance surpassing threefold his near-contemporary Marco Polo.

The most famous of these travelers was Marco Polo.

Xanadu ( here called Ciandu, as Marco Polo spelled it ) on the French map of Asia made by Sanson d ' Abbeville, geographer of King Louis XIV, dated 1650.

According to The Travels of Marco Polo, they passed through much of Asia, and met with the Kublai Khan.

In 1271, during the dogado of Doge Lorenzo Tiepolo, Marco Polo ( at seventeen years of age ), his father, and his uncle set off for Asia on the series of adventures that were later documented in Marco's book.

While Polo's book describes paper money and the burning of coal, it fails to mention the Great Wall of China, chopsticks, and footbinding, making skeptics wonder if Marco Polo had really gone to China, or wrote his book based on hearsay.

With Richard Lewontin, Gould wrote an influential 1979 paper entitled, " The Spandrels of San Marco and the Panglossian Paradigm ", which introduced the architectural term " spandrel " into evolutionary biology.

In 1763, at the age of 17, Jones wrote the poem Caissa in Latin hexameters, based on a 658-line poem called " Scacchia, Ludus " published in 1527 by Marco Girolamo Vida, giving a mythical origin of chess that has become well known in the chess world.

In San Marco, fra Girolamo taught logic to the novices, wrote instructional manuals on ethics, logic, philosophy and government, composed devotional works and prepared his sermons for local congregations.

The German company StarDivision in Lüneburg ( founded by 16-year-old Marco Börries in 1984 ) wrote the original components of StarOffice.

Doubtless it was Marco Polo's description that inspired Antonio Pigafetta, one of Magellan's companions, who wrote or had ghost-written an embroidered account of the circumglobal voyage ; in Pigafetta's account the home grounds of the roc were the seas of China.

It is considered by scholars to have been the city of Yachi Fu ( Duck Pond Town ) where people had used cowries as cash and ate their meat raw, as described by the 13th-century Venetian traveler Marco Polo who traveled to the area and wrote about his fascination of the place.

Marco Polo ( 1254 – 1324 ), famous for the first " world trip ", met Kurds in Mosul on his way to China, and he wrote what he had learned about Kurdistan and the Kurds to enlighten his European contemporaries.

Several early medieval herbalists and physicians wrote tamar indi, medieval Latin use was tamarindus, and Marco Polo wrote of tamarandi.

It also featured such colorful columnists as Pauline Phillips, who wrote under the name " Dear Abby ," " Count Marco " ( Marc Spinelli ), Stanton Delaplane, Terence O ' Flaherty, Lucius Beebe, Art Hoppe, Charles McCabe, and Herb Caen.

After Caccini, composers such as Marco da Gagliano, Sigismondo d ' India, and Claudio Saracini published collections of their own ; while Caccini's music was almost entirely diatonic, some of these later composers, particular d ' India, wrote their solo madrigals in a more experimental chromatic idiom.

Composers who wrote a called " Missa Solemnis " have included France Ačko ( 1941 ), Hendrik Andriessen ( 1946 ), Marco Betta, František Brixi, Antonio Buonomo ( 1983 ), Alfredo Casella ( 1944 ), Paul Creston, Georg Druschetzky ( 1804 ), Bohumil Fidler ( 1901 ), Joseph-Hector Fiocco, Konstanty Gorski, Michael Haydn ( 1772 ), Václav Emanuel Horák, Sigurd Islandsmoen ( 1954 ), Friedrich Kiel, Karel Blažej Kopřiva, Josef Lammerz ( 1990 ), Boleslaw Ocias and Johann Nepomuk Schelble, Wolfgang Seifen, Johann Baptist Vanhal ( 1778 ), Bedřich Antonín Wiedermann ( 1848 ).

The earliest surviving written account of Silkies comes from Marco Polo, who wrote of a furry chicken in the 13th century, during his travels in Asia.

Thanks to Bob Rosati, arranger and owner of a studio in Sesto Fiorentino, Marco began recording their first demos, he met Beppe Dati, composer and poet, who wrote several plays.

* In 1997, Bernard and his brother David wrote an article ( available here ) questioning the authenticity of City of Light, a book that purported to be an account translated by David Selbourne of the voyage by Italian Jacob D ' Ancona to 13th Century China, years before Marco Polo.

The famous explorer Marco Polo of the 12th Century wrote that Sri Lanka is the finest island in the whole world.

It is known as Khanbaliq ( 汗八里 ), also spelled as Khanbalikh in Turkic languages, meaning " Great residence of the Khan ", and Marco Polo wrote of it as Cambaluc, Cambuluc, or Kanbalu.

In 2010, professors of statistics Marco Riani and Anthony C. Atkinson wrote in a scientific paper that the statistical analysis of the raw dates obtained from the three laboratories for the radiocarbon test suggests the presence of contamination in some of the samples.
