Sir John Hussey, later Lord Hussey, was her chamberlain from 1530, and his wife, Lady Anne, daughter of George Grey, 2nd Earl of Kent, was one of Mary's attendants.

Rebels in the North of England, including Lord Hussey, Mary's former chamberlain, campaigned against Henry's religious reforms, and one of their demands was that Mary be made legitimate.

On 9 March 1566, Mary's secretary, David Rizzio, was murdered by Protestant rebels loyal to Darnley.

On 29 July 1565 the marriage took place by Roman Catholic rites in Mary's private chapel at Holyrood, after which Darnley left Mary to hear the nuptial mass alone.

According to the English diplomats Thomas Randolph and the Earl of Bedford, the murder of David Rizzio ( who was rumored to be the father of Mary's unborn child ) was Darnley ’ s own addition to the plot of winning over the Crown Matrimonial.

Darnley is portrayed as a snivelling, pathetic character who marries Mary as part of a plot by Elizabeth I ( Glenda Jackson ) to weaken Mary's claim to the English throne.

The murder was the catalyst for the downfall of Darnley and had serious consequences for Mary's subsequent career .< ref >

He was one of Bothwell's judges for the murder of Darnley in 1567, and in 1568 he accompanied Moray to the York inquiry into Queen Mary's guilt.

Soon after the wedding, Darnley throws a childish temper tantrum, complaining that he has no real power and is merely Mary's King Consort.

Darnley had previously had him as a lover and accuses him of fathering Mary's expected child.

A group of Scottish lords persuade Darnley to help get rid of Riccio, whom they murder in Mary's presence.

During Mary's and Darnley's difficult marriage, Darnley secretly allied himself with the rebels and conspired in the murder of the Queen's private secretary, David Rizzio, just three months before James's birth.

Darnley was a great-grandson of King Henry VII of England and Mary's first cousin, and he was considered to have a strong claim to the Scottish throne.

Mary's marriage to Darnley rapidly became unhappy, and despite Darnley's constant demands for the Crown Matrimonial, Mary never gave it to him.

Later, he supported Mary's marriage with Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and was the leader of the band which murdered David Rizzio.

On Mary's return to Scotland in 1561 she gave Melville a pension and an appointment in her household, and she employed him as special emissary to reconcile Queen Elizabeth to her marriage with Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.

In August 1567, the Earl of Moray intimated to Guzman de Silva, Spanish ambassador to England, that he had in his possession a letter in Queen Mary's own handwriting that would implicate her in the murder of Lord Darnley.
