The Eye of the World revolves around the lives of a group of young people from Emond's Field in The Two Rivers district: Rand al ' Thor, Matrim ( Mat ) Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, Egwene al ' Vere, and Nynaeve al ' Meara.

Accompanying, guiding, and protecting the three potential boys — Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara — she took along a few others ( Thom Merrilin, Nynaeve al ' Meara and Egwene al ' Vere ) to the safety of the White Tower.

Rand, his two friends ( Perrin Aybara and Mat Cauthon ), his childhood sweetheart Egwene al ' Vere and the gleeman Thom Merrilin were led out of Emond's Field by Aes Sedai Moiraine Damodred and her Warder, al ' Lan Mandragoran ( the group is eventually joined by Emonds Field's Wisdom, Nynaeve al ' Meara ).

He then set out with Mat, Egwene and Moiraine to the Waste, seeking the endorsement of the Aiel as their Car ' a ' carn, literally a " chief of chiefs ".

Book 3, The Dragon Reborn, was in fact told almost exclusively from the points-of-view of Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara, and Egwene al ' Vere, despite the fact that it is undoubtedly about Rand ( all three parties eventually follow him to Tear and are present when he pulls the sword Callandor from the Stone and proclaims himself the Dragon Reborn ), and the following books have continued in following the adventures of other characters besides Rand, to such a degree at times that in the tenth book, Crossroads of Twilight, Rand only appears in two chapters and the epilogue.

He first appeared in The Dragon Reborn where he betrays and later saves Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne with the help of Mat Cauthon.

Mat Cauthon is taken to Tar Valon by Verin Mathwin, Nynaeve al ' Meara, Egwene al ' Vere, Elayne Trakand, and Hurin.

In Tear, Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne are unwillingly betrayed by Juilin Sandar, a thief catcher, ( who was under the influence of a form of Compulsion from Liandrin ) to the Black Ajah and then imprisoned in the Stone of Tear, where they are rescued by Mat and a repentant Juilin.

Rand uses a Portal Stone to transport Mat, Egwene, Moiraine, and the Aiel at the Stone of Tear from Tear to the Aiel Waste, where Taardad and Shaido Aiel are waiting for them.

The youngest of five daughters, Egwene grew up in Emond's Field alongside Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon, Perrin Aybara and Nynaeve al ' Meara.

After Rand had secured Tear, Mat talked with Egwene, who reluctantly told him that a freestanding redstone ter ' angreal could give him three true answers to any question.

When Moiraine absconded with several Two Rivers youths — specifically Rand al ' Thor, his friends Mat Cauthon and Perrin Aybara, and Rand's childhood sweetheart ( and Nynaeve's apprentice ) Egwene al ' Vere, Nynaeve volunteered to track them down and bring them back.

When Rand dispatched Mat to return Egwene and Elayne to him, Egwene instead assigned him as an escort to Nynaeve, Elayne and Aviendha, and sent them to Ebou Dar for the Bowl of the Winds, a ter ' angreal that could change the weather and possibly break the unnatural summer the Dark One had imposed on the world.

The story features young heroes Rand al ' Thor, Mat Cauthon, and Perrin Aybara, who join Shienaren soldiers in a quest to retrieve the Horn of Valere.

* In the city of Ebou Dar in Altara, Elayne Trakand, Nynaeve al ' Meara, Aviendha, and Mat Cauthon search for a ter ' angreal, the Bowl of the Winds, to break the unnatural heat brought on by the Dark One's manipulation of climate.

In A Crown of Swords he traveled to Ebou Dar with Mat, Birgitte Silverbow, Elayne Trakand and Nynaeve al ' Meara to find the bowl of the winds.

Whenever he and childhood friends Rand al ' Thor and Perrin Aybara were caught out of line, Mat was frequently the impetus behind it ( and his sisters Bodewhin and Eldrin frequently the ones snitching on him ).
