Most of the rumors circle from the same source of Saint Jerome who claimed “ Cyril was an out and out Arian, was offered the see on Maximus death on the condition that he would repudiate his ordination at the hands of that Bishop ”.

Saint Jerome was claiming not only that Cyril was an Arian but also involved directly or indirectly in the death of Maximus who he replaced as Bishop of Jerusalem.

Most accounts of Cyril place him in better light like Theodoret of Cyrrhus who referred to Cyril as “ an earnest champion of the apostolic decrees of Nicaea and says nothing about Arian conspiracy to make him Maximus successor ”.

When Cyril ’ s bishop Maximus died Cyril was appointed bishop by Acasius of Caesaria, who was himself an Arian and viewed Cyril as a theological ally.

Honorius now found himself an able commander, Constantius, who defeated Maximus and Gerontius, and then Constantine, in 411.

The bishop had withstood Maximus, who ruled for some years a large part of the western portion of the empire, though he never conquered Italy.

This last statement has reference to the bishops who had left Maximus no peace till he had stained his hands with the blood of Priscillian and his followers.

This mysterious Western, offshoot of Gnosticism had no single feature about it which could soften the hostility of a character such as Martin's, but he resisted the introduction of secular punishment for evil doctrine, and withdrew from communion with those bishops in Gaul, a large majority, who invoked the aid of Maximus against their erring brethren.

Maximus consolidates his power by a forced marriage with Licinia Eudoxia, widow of Valentinian III.

A noteworthy example of a trabeated system is in Volubilis, from the Roman era, where one side of the Decumanus Maximus is lined with trabeated elements, while the opposite side of the roadway is designed in arched style.

* Magnus Maximus returns to Britain to aid them with the Barbarians raids triggered by Maximus ' withdrawal of troops to the continent.

Negotiations followed in 384 including the intervention of Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, leading to an accord with Valentinian II and Theodosius I in which Maximus was recognized as Augustus in the west.

Maximus ' bid for imperial power in 383 coincides with the last date for any evidence of a Roman military presence in Wales, the western Pennines, and the fortress of Deva.
