The discovery that movies are a form of fiction was made in the early years of this century and it was made chiefly by two men, a French magician, Georges Melies, and an American employee of Edison, Edwin S. Porter.

For example, he would film a magician and a girl ; the magician would make a gesture and Melies stopped the camera.

Gorges Melies made a film Baron Mucherons Dream, his first film to be distributed by Pathé.

Melies, the stage manager at the Theatre Robert-Houdin, was inspired to develop a series of more than 500 short films, between 1914, in the process developing or inventing such techniques as multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand painted colour.

In a series of fairy tales and fantasies, Melies demonstrated that the film is superbly equipped to tell a straightforward story, with beginning, middle and end, complications, resolutions, climaxes, and conclusions.

This discovery of Melies was vastly more important than his sometimes dazzling, magician's tricks produced on film.

Pathé's relationship with Melies soured, and in 1913 Melies went bankrupt, and his last film was never released by Pathé.

The film subsequently won the Melies D ' Argent Award for Best European Film at Sitges in Spain-the world's premier horror and fantasy genre festival.

Florey grew up in Paris near the studio of George Melies, and as a young man served as assistant to Louis Feuillade.

The genre has existed since the early years of silent cinema, when Georges Melies ' A Trip to the Moon ( 1902 ) amazed audiences with its trick photography effects.

Jules Verne was the first major science fiction author to be adapted for the screen with Melies Le Voyage dans la Lune ( 1902 ) and 20, 000 lieues sous les mers ( 1907 ), which used Verne's scenarios as a framework for fantastic visuals.

Pathé and Melies worked together in 1911.

Examples of animated letter-forms appeared as early as 1899 in the advertising work of George Melies.
