Robert's poem was rewritten in prose in the 12th century as the Estoire de Merlin, also called the Vulgate or Prose Merlin.

In the 13th-century French Arthurian romances, Merlin warns against this marriage ; in Chestre's poem, he arranges it, betraying Chestre's willingness to adapt a by-then established legend in his own way.

The earliest English verse romance concerning Merlin is Arthour and Merlin, which drew from the chronicles and the French Lancelot-Grail.

Malory's source was the Old French Post-Vulgate Cycle, specifically the text known as the Suite du Merlin.
