Miyazaki's next film, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind ( Kaze no Tani no Naushika, 1984 ), was an adventure film that introduced many of the themes which recur in later films: a concern with ecology and the human impact on the environment ; a fascination with aircraft and flight ; pacifism, including an anti-military streak ; feminism ; and morally ambiguous characterizations, especially among villains.

The success of Miyazaki's films has invited comparisons with American animator Walt Disney, British animator Nick Park and Robert Zemeckis.

Miyazaki's films often contain recurrent themes like humanity's relationship with nature and technology, and the difficulty of maintaining a pacifist ethic.

The series also elaborates on the characters and events in the book, and is an early example of characterizations which recur throughout Miyazaki's later work: a girl who is in touch with nature, a warrior woman who appears menacing but is not an antagonist, and a boy who seems destined for the girl.

The Ghibli Museum in Tokyo is devoted to Miyazaki's work, which was also exhibited in a 2005 retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Miyazaki's work in television is less known than his films.

The film is loosely based on Miyazaki's manga Hikōtei Jidai.

It is said to have inspired the forest setting in Hayao Miyazaki's film Princess Mononoke.

Dr. Miyazaki's Lillooet residence, the Miyazaki House, is still open for tours of the doctor's office ( which has been preserved as he left it ).

There is also a more than passing resemblance to Hayao Miyazaki's film Porco Rosso about a pigheaded man who flies a seaplane and fights air pirates, which the creators of Talespin explain by the influence the previous Miyazaki's films had on them, and the possibility of Miyazaki watching Talespin at some point.

While the film was released in 1992 ( two years after TaleSpin had already aired ) Porco Rosso is based on Miyazaki's manga, Hikōtei Jidai which was first published in 1989.

Sky Captain is also different in its message which is largely about the film genre while Laputa has strong anti-war and anti-technology themes found in most of Miyazaki's work.

John Grant writes in his book Masters of Animation that " overall affect of the animation is akin to that of the great anime creators – one has to keep reminding oneself that Wizards predates Miyazaki's The Castle of Cagliostro ( 1979 ), not the other way round.

Another notable film is Hayao Miyazaki's animated historical fantasy Princess Mononoke.

The scene where Doki befriends the hedgehog is a nod to Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, in which Nausicaä tames Teto the fox-squirrel.

The deer-like creature on the Jade box art is an altered version of the forest spirit Shishigami from Hayao Miyazaki's anime Princess Mononoke.

His death is said to have been caused by excess work, and seems to be the main reason for Hayao Miyazaki's announcement of retirement in 1998.
