Notable jazz bassists from the 1940s to the 1950s included bassist Jimmy Blanton ( 1918 – 1942 ) whose short tenure in the Duke Ellington Swing band ( cut short by his death from tuberculosis ) introduced new melodic and harmonic solo ideas for the instrument ; bassist Ray Brown ( 1926 – 2002 ), known for backing Beboppers Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum and Charlie Parker, and forming the Modern Jazz Quartet ; hard bop bassist Ron Carter ( born 1937 ), who has appeared on 3, 500 albums make him one of the most-recorded bassists in jazz history, including LPs by Thelonious Monk and Wes Montgomery and many Blue Note Records artists ; and Paul Chambers ( 1935 – 1969 ), a member of the Miles Davis Quintet ( including the landmark modal jazz recording Kind of Blue ) and many other 1950s and 1960s rhythm sections, was known for his virtuosic improvisations.

In his teens Hubbard worked locally with brothers Wes and Monk Montgomery and worked with bassist Larry Ridley and saxophonist James Spaulding.

Heath played with the Modern Jazz Quartet throughout their long history and also worked with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Wes Montgomery and Thelonious Monk.

Along with Monk Montgomery and Bob Cranshaw, Swallow was among the first jazz bassists to do so ( with much encouragement from Roy Haynes, one of Swallow's favorite drummers ).

What Parker and his contemporaries -- Gillespie, Davis, Monk, Roach ( Tristano is an anomaly ), etc. -- did was to absorb the musical ornamentation of the older jazz into the basic structure, of which it then became an integral part, and with which it then developed.

Wray was married three times – to the writers John Monk Saunders and Robert Riskin and to the neurosurgeon Dr. Sanford Rothenberg ( January 28, 1919 – January 4, 1991 ).

The fruit of this harvest of continental horrors was Matthew Gregory Lewis's lurid tale of monastic debauchery, black magic, and diabolism The Monk ( 1796 ).

Coltrane, who in the meantime had freed himself from his drug habits, was available after a highly fruitful experience with Thelonious Monk and was hired back, as was Philly Joe Jones.

On October 26, 2008, Paul Allen was given the Herbie Hancock Humanitarian Award from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for his " visionary achievements as a businessman and a global philanthropist.

Fulcher of Chartres was present at the Council, but his version of the speech was written c. 1100 – 1106 ; Robert the Monk may have been present, but his version dates from about 1106.

While Robert the Monk says so, it is also possible that the slogan was created as a catchy propaganda motto afterward.

His most enduring relationship, however, was with the music of Thelonious Monk: he recorded the first album to feature only Monk compositions ( Reflections, Prestige, 1958 ) and briefly played in Monk's band in 1960 and later on Monk's Big Band / Quartet album ( Columbia, 1963 ).

The pioneering work in reviving the cornett was done in the 1950s, in Britain by Christopher Monk and in Germany by Otto Steinkopf, one of the first to perform publicly on a reconstructed instrument.

The Monk liked to meddle in history and to change it for his own amusement and for what he considered to be the better: lending mechanical assistance to the builders of Stonehenge ; giving Leonardo da Vinci tips on aircraft design ; making money by using time travel to exploit compound interest ; and, when the Doctor first encountered him, attempting to prevent the Norman Conquest as part of a plan to guide England into an early age of technological prosperity.

In jazz one could cite a first wave of experimenters associated with bebop, such as Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon, and Bud Powell, and then a second wave associated with free jazz, including Ornette Coleman, Eric Dolphy, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, and the later recordings of John Coltrane.

In 1944 Monk made his first studio recordings with the Coleman Hawkins Quartet.

Hawkins was among the first prominent jazz musicians to promote Monk, and Monk later returned the favor by inviting Hawkins to join him on the 1957 session with John Coltrane.

Monk made his first recordings as leader for Blue Note in 1947 ( later anthologised on Genius of Modern Music, Vol.

In 1954, Monk paid his first visit to Europe, performing and recording in Paris.

The first of these, Thelonious Monk Plays the Music of Duke Ellington, featuring bass innovator Oscar Pettiford and drummer Kenny Clarke, included Ellington pieces " Caravan " and " It Don't Mean A Thing ( If It Ain't Got That Swing )".

The album, however, was largely regarded as the first success for Monk ; according to Orrin Keepnews, " It was the first that made a real splash.

Working with producer Teo Macero on his debut for the label, the sessions in the first week of November had a stable line-up that had been with him for two years: tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse ( who worked with Monk from 1959 to 1970 ), bassist John Ore, and drummer Frankie Dunlop.

In England the Wandering Jew makes an appearance in one of the secondary plots in Matthew Lewis's Gothic novel The Monk, first published in 1796.

In 1947, pianist Thelonious Monk recorded his first sessions as a leader for the label, which were also the Blue Note debut of drummer Art Blakey.

According to an interview with executive producer David Hoberman, ABC first conceived the series Monk as a police show with an Inspector Clouseau-like character suffering from obsessive – compulsive disorder.

Summers played guitar on Sting's album ... Nothing Like the Sun ( 1987 ), a favor the singer returned by playing bass on Summers ' album Charming Snakes ( 1989 ) and later singing lead vocals on "' Round Midnight " for Summers ' tribute to Thelonious Monk Green Chimneys ( 1999 ).

After having his cabaret card restored, Monk relaunched his New York career with a landmark six-month residency at the Five Spot Cafe in New York beginning in June 1957, leading a quartet with John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Shadow Wilson on drums.

Monk did not form another long-term band until June 1958, when he began a second residency at the Five Spot, again with a quartet, this time with Griffin ( and later Charlie Rouse ) on tenor, Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums.

After the departure of Ore and Dunlop, the remainder of the rhythm section in Monk's quartet during the bulk of his Columbia period was Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums, both of whom joined in 1964, Along with Rouse, they remained with Monk for over four years, his longest-serving band.

He finessed thick and rich chords in the lower bass register ; although sometimes compared to Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk for his dissonant voicing, his emphasis on weight, texture and frequent repetition of a single and simple motif as opposed to linear and melodic improvisation gave a heavy and melancholic color to his sound.

The Giants of Jazz was a jazz all-star group of the 1970s which featured Art Blakey ( drums ), Dizzy Gillespie ( trumpet ), Al McKibbon ( bass ), Thelonious Monk ( piano ), Sonny Stitt ( alto and tenor sax ), and Kai Winding ( trombone ).

Hill put together the house band which included Thelonious Monk on piano, Joe Guy on trumpet, Nick Fenton on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums.
