The name Monongalia may be a misspelling of Monongahela.

The word Monongalia is a Latinized version of the Native American word Monongahela, which means " falling banks ", in reference to the geological instability of the river's banks.

Nicholas Decker, the first settler to establish a settlement in the vicinity of what is now Morgantown, on 29 April 1781, surveyed for Zackquill Morgan assignee of Isaac Lemasters, of land in Monongalia County, on Deckers Creek and the Monongahela River, including his settlement thereon in the year 1772, agreeable to and in part of a certificate for from the commissioners of adjusting claims to unpatented lands in the county of Monongalia — James Chew, assisted Mr. James Madison, surveyor.

Much of this last stretch of US 119 heading towards Uniontown, Pennsylvania is already bypassed by traffic using I-68, Monongalia County Route 857 and PA 857.

It then flows through an impressive gorge — Cheat Canyon — northeastwardly from Albright, collecting Big Sandy Creek before entering Monongalia County, where a hydro-electric dam just south of the Pennsylvania border causes it to widen as the Cheat Lake reservoir.

Ohio and Monongalia Counties also lost territory that they claimed to Pennsylvania ( Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties ) in this realignment.

The survey determined that parts of Ohio and Monongalia counties and nearly all of Yohogania County were within the Pennsylvania boundaries.

( Similarly, part of Ohio County's claim are now in Washington and Greene Counties in Pennsylvania, and part of what had been considered Monongalia County are in Washington, Greene, and Fayette Counties, Pennsylvania.

Monongalia County encompassed much of what is now north-central West Virginia, and parts of what are now Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties in Pennsylvania.
