Moore and goodness
Moore did not consider goodness and rightness to be natural properties, i. e., they cannot be defined in terms of any natural properties.
In his initial argument, Moore concluded that any similar definition of goodness could be criticized in the same way.
Moore contended that goodness cannot be analysed in terms of any other property.
Moore argued that once arguments based on the naturalistic fallacy had been discarded, questions of intrinsic goodness could only be settled by appeal to what he ( following Sidgwick ) called " moral intuitions :" self-evident propositions which recommend themselves to moral reflection, but which are not susceptible to either direct proof or disproof ( PE § 45 ).
According to Moore, a moral actor cannot survey the “ goodness ” inherent in the various parts of a situation, assign a value to each of them, and then generate a sum in order to get an idea of its total value.
Moore, holds that there are objective and irreducible moral properties ( such as the property of ' goodness '), and that we sometimes have intuitive or otherwise a priori awareness of moral properties or of moral truths.
Moore goes on to explain that he pays special attention to the fallacy as it occurs in ethics, and identifies that specific form of the fallacy as ' naturalistic ', because ( 1 ) it is so commonly committed in ethics, and ( 2 ) because committing the fallacy in ethics involves confusing a natural object ( such as survival or pleasure ) with goodness, something that is ( he argues ) not a natural object.
The target of Moore's discussion of the " naturalistic fallacy " is reductionism at least as much as it is naturalism specifically, and the important lesson, for Moore, is that the meaning of the term " good " and the nature of the property goodness are irreducibly sui generis.
Moore that the " naturalistic fallacy " is really a fallacy, he gave an entirely naturalistic analysis of goodness, holding that an experience is intrinsically good to the degree that it ( a ) fulfills an impulse or drive and ( b ) generates a feeling-tone of satisfaction attendant upon such fulfillment.
Moore, whose Principia Ethica ( 1903 ) argued famously that goodness was an indefinable, non-natural property of which we had intuitive awareness.
Moore originated the term " the naturalistic fallacy " to refer to the ( alleged ) error of confusing goodness with some natural property, and he deployed the Open Question Argument to show why this was an error.
