She is best known for Mistress Mary Powell, which first appeared in 1849, and The Household of Sir Thomas More, a picture of More's home life in the form of a diary written by his daughter Margaret.

More's influential role in the burning of Tyndale is reported by Moynahan.

Burning at the stake had long been a standard punishment for heresy — about thirty burnings had taken place in the century before More's elevation to Chancellor, and burning continued to be used by both Catholics and Protestants during the religious upheaval of the following decades.

While biographers such as Ackroyd have taken a relatively tolerant view of More's campaign against Protestantism by placing his actions within the turbulent religious climate of the time, other equally eminent historians, such as Richard Marius, have been more critical, believing that persecutions -- including what he perceives as the advocacy of extermination for Protestants -- were a betrayal of More's earlier humanist convictions.

St Dunstan's Church, an Anglican parish church in Canterbury, possesses More's head, rescued by his beloved daughter Margaret Roper.

The walls of the chapel are host to impressive stained glass donated by Roman Catholics to commemorate the events in More's life.

The title of Sir Thomas More's 1516 fictional work Utopia is a double entendre because of the pun between two Greek-derived words that would have identical pronunciation: with his spelling, it means " no place " ( as echoed later in Samuel Butler's later Erewhon ); spelled as the rare word Eutopia, it is pronounced the same by English-speaking readers, but has the meaning " good place ".

However, Henry himself appears to have been much more influenced by the opinions on monasticism of the humanists Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More, especially as found in Erasmus's work In Praise of Folly ( 1511 ) and More's Utopia ( 1516 ).
