Only one other contemporary of More's evokes so immediate and direct a response, and only one other contemporary work -- Niccolo Machiavelli and The Prince.

More's work, however, little mentions King Henry VII, the first Tudor king, perhaps for having persecuted his father, Sir John More.

Some maintain the position that More's Utopia functions only on the level of a satire, a work intended to reveal more about the England of his time than about an idealistic society.

The title of Sir Thomas More's 1516 fictional work Utopia is a double entendre because of the pun between two Greek-derived words that would have identical pronunciation: with his spelling, it means " no place " ( as echoed later in Samuel Butler's later Erewhon ); spelled as the rare word Eutopia, it is pronounced the same by English-speaking readers, but has the meaning " good place ".

However, Henry himself appears to have been much more influenced by the opinions on monasticism of the humanists Desiderius Erasmus and Thomas More, especially as found in Erasmus's work In Praise of Folly ( 1511 ) and More's Utopia ( 1516 ).

" However, More's work is subject to various interpretations, and it is not clear that he felt that earthly society should be conducted the same way as in Utopia.

Erasmus revised and extended the work, which he originally wrote in the space of a week while sojourning with Sir Thomas More at More's estate in Bucklersbury.

Subjectively, audiences experience More's speech in the passage attributed to Shakespeare as more vividly written and dramatically effective than the rest of the work.

In the mid-nineties Gould began to work as producer and in 1997 he co-produced Faith No More's last record Album of the Year with the former Swans drummer Roli Mosimann.

Both More's and Shakespeare's works are controversial to contemporary historians for their unflattering portrait of King Richard III, a bias partly due to both authors ' allegiance to the reigning Tudor dynasty that wrested the throne from Richard III in the Wars of the Roses.

Most scholars see it as some kind of comment or criticism of contemporary European society, for the evils of More's day are laid out in Book I and in many ways apparently solved in Book II.

But although the idea of communism is very old even in More's day and did not spring full-clad from his imagination in 1515, it is not communism as such that we are concerned with.

In More's Utopia communism is not a means of separating out a warrior elite from the lumpish mass.

Unlike the word " utopia " ( named for Thomas More's book, Utopia ), " Arcadia " does not carry the connotation of a human civilization ; Arcadia is presented as the spontaneous result of life lived naturally, uncorrupted by civilization.
