In June 1917, when the Royal Family stopped using their German names and titles and adopted the more British-sounding " Windsor ": Prince Louis of Battenberg became Louis Mountbatten, and was created Marquess of Milford Haven.

When war broke out in 1939, Mountbatten became commander of the 5th Destroyer Flotilla aboard his ship Kelly, which was famous for its many daring exploits.

As a result of the Dieppe raid, Mountbatten became a controversial figure in Canada, with the Royal Canadian Legion distancing itself from him during his visits there during his later career ; his relations with Canadian veterans " remained frosty ".

Mountbatten arrives on board HMS Glasgow at Malta to assume command of the Mediterranean Fleet, 16 May 1952After India, Mountbatten served as commander of the 1st cruiser squadron in the Mediterranean Fleet and, having been granted the substantive rank of vice admiral on 22 June 1949, he became Second-in-Command of the Mediterranean Fleet in April 1950.

This became evident when Mountbatten had to be reassured that the fission reactions from the Bikini Atoll tests would not spread through the oceans and blow up the planet.

As Mountbatten became more familiar with this new form of weaponry, he increasingly grew opposed to its use in combat yet at the same time he realised the potential nuclear energy had, especially with regards to submarines.

From 1967 until 1978, Mountbatten became president of the United World Colleges Organisation, then represented by a single college: that of Atlantic College in South Wales.

On 27 April 1977, shortly before his 77th birthday, Mountbatten became the first member of the Royal Family to appear on the TV guest show This Is Your Life.

On the day Mountbatten was assassinated the IRA ambushed and killed eighteen British Army soldiers, sixteen of them from the Parachute Regiment at Warrenpoint, County Down, in what became known as the Warrenpoint ambush.

While on a fund-raising tour of the United States in October 1979 on behalf of the Royal Opera House, Margaret became embroiled in a controversy following the assassination of Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma.

Prior to the official engagement announcement, he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles, converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism, and became a naturalised British subject, adopting the surname Mountbatten from his British maternal grandparents.

In India, he became an intimate of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and extensively advised the Indian government on economic matters ; he harshly criticised Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of British rule, for Mountbatten's passive role in the Partition of India in 1947 and the bloody partition of Punjab and Bengal.

The Earl Mountbatten of Burma and The Princess Royal have since held this position, and in 2010 Prince William became the newest Academy president.

Soon after Elizabeth became queen of the Commonwealth realms in 1952, the Earl Mountbatten ( as Philip's uncle was then known ) advocated that she change the name of her royal house to House of Mountbatten ; it was the standard practice for the wife in a marriage to adopt her husband's surname.

George VI continued to hold the title King of India for two years during the short Governor-Generalships of Lord Mountbatten and of C. Rajagopalachari, until India became a republic on 26 January 1950.

Once in office, Mountbatten quickly became aware if Britain were to avoid involvement in a civil war, which seemed increasingly likely, there was no alternative to partition and a hasty exit from India.

In 1993 he received the Mountbatten Medal from the Institution of Electrical Engineers and has received Honorary Doctorate Degrees from a number of universities including Warwick, Sheffield, Edinburgh and York.

Admiral of the Fleet Louis Francis Albert Victor Nicholas George Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma ( born Prince Louis of Battenberg ; 25 June 1900 – 27 August 1979 ), was a British statesman and naval officer, an uncle of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and second cousin once removed to Elizabeth II.

In 1979 Mountbatten was assassinated by the Provisional Irish Republican Army ( IRA ), who planted a bomb in his yacht, the Shadow V, at Mullaghmore, County Sligo, in the Republic of Ireland.

His siblings were Princess Alice of Greece and Denmark ( mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh ), Queen Louise of Sweden, and George Mountbatten, 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven.

Mountbatten was a favourite of Winston Churchill, ( although after 1948 Churchill never spoke to him again since he was famously annoyed with Mountbatten's later role in the independence of India and Pakistan ), and on 27 October 1941 Mountbatten replaced Roger Keyes as Chief of Combined Operations and received promotion to commodore.

Lord and Lady Mountbatten had two daughters: Patricia Mountbatten, 2nd Countess Mountbatten of Burma ( born on 14 February 1924 ), sometime lady-in-waiting to the Queen, and Lady Pamela Carmen Louise ( Hicks ) ( born on 19 April 1929 ), who accompanied them to India in 1947-48 and was also sometime lady-in-waiting to the Queen.

In October 1961, fate intervened in the shape and other attributes of one-legged retail chemist from Bolton, Leggy Mountbatten ( a parody of Brian Epstein ), who, after falling into " The Cavern " one night, decided he hated the boys ' music, but liked the cut of their jib ( and especially the cut of their trousers ).

Childers's state funeral in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, was attended by world leaders including the Earl Mountbatten of Burma ( representing Queen Elizabeth II ), the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Opposition, and presidents and crowned heads of state from Europe and beyond.

In 1947, Princess Elizabeth ( as Queen Elizabeth II was then titled ), heir presumptive to King George VI, married Philip Mountbatten.

However, not wishing to repeat the difficulties of three decades previous, Philip, a few months before his marriage, renounced his princely titles and adopted the surname Mountbatten, which was that of his uncle and mentor, the Viscount Mountbatten of Burma, and itself was adopted by the Viscount's father ( Philip's maternal grandfather ), Prince Louis of Battenberg, in 1917.

The subsidiary titles of the Earldom are: Viscount Mountbatten of Burma, of Romsey in the County of Southampton ( created 1946 ), and Baron Romsey, of Romsey in the County of Southampton ( 1947 ).

In view of implacable demands by the political leadership of both Hindu and Islamic communities in British India for a separate Hindu and a separate Muslim homeland, Mountbatten conceded the notion of two nations consisting of a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan ( which incorporated East Pakistan, now Bangladesh ).

It is now the largest parish church in the county and houses the tomb of Lord Mountbatten of Burma.

This appointment was made on the recommendation of Lord Mountbatten, whose nephew Philip Mountbatten was now the Duke of Edinburgh.

The second creation came in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1947 when Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, the husband of Princess Elizabeth ( now Queen Elizabeth II ), was made Baron Greenwich, of Greenwich in the County of London.

In 1944 he joined South East Asia Command, painting Lord Louis Mountbatten and key members of his staff, pictures now in the Imperial War Museum, London.

In August 1941, Mountbatten was appointed captain of the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious which lay in Norfolk, Virginia, for repairs following action at Malta in the Mediterranean in January.

Mountbatten, who was promoted to the acting rank of vice-admiral in March 1942, was in large part responsible for the planning and organisation of The Raid at St. Nazaire in mid 1942, an operation resulting in the disuse of one of the most heavily defended docks in Nazi-occupied France until well after war's end, the ramifications of which greatly contributed to allied supremacy in the Battle of the Atlantic.

Mountbatten served his final posting at the Admiralty as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from April 1955 to July 1959, the position which his father had held some forty years prior.

Mountbatten expressed his feelings towards the use of nuclear weapons in combat in his article " A Military Commander Surveys The Nuclear Arms Race ", which was published shortly after his death in International Security in the winter of 1979 – 80.

Despite security advice and warnings from the Garda Síochána, on 27 August 1979 Mountbatten went lobster-potting and tuna fishing in a thirty-foot ( 10 m ) wooden boat, the Shadow V, which had been moored in the harbour at Mullaghmore.

Mountbatten was buried in Romsey Abbey after a televised funeral in Westminster Abbey which he himself had comprehensively planned .< ref >

Further, this fact is confirmed and reiterated from the correspondence of the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir dated October 26, 1947 with Lord Mountbatten, Governor General of India which states that the state of Jammu and Kashmir has a common boundary with the “ Soviet Republic ”, and the said statement also determines the fact that inter alia Gilgit and Kanjut ( which includes the Raskam, Hunza valley and Taghdumbash ) are integral parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had also made a similar statement that " Jammu and Kashmir's Northern

During recent decades, new buildings were added that contravened the master plan of Spence, such as the Synthetic Chemistry Building and Mountbatten Building ( the latter of which was destroyed by fire in 2005 ).

Mountbatten commented: " Each island is a veritable fortress, the assault against which cannot be contemplated unless the defences are neutralised, or reduced to a very considerable extent by prior action.

Lord Romsey was the courtesy title by which Lady Mountbatten of Burma's eldest son and heir was known until he succeeded his father as 8th Lord Brabourne.

Both fathers, however, objected ; Prince Philip complaining that the Prince of Wales would be eclipsed by his famous uncle ( who had served as the last British Viceroy and first Governor-General of India ), while Lord Brabourne warned that a joint visit would rivet media attention on the cousins before they could decide on becoming a couple, thereby potentially dashing the very prospect for which Mountbatten hoped.

Large colonial, Chinese and Peranakan bungalows were built along Meyer Road and Mountbatten Road from Katong Park to Tanjong Katong ( which in English means " Road of the Turtle Mirage Promontory ").

When Lord Louis Mountbatten, the Supreme Commander, South East Asia, visited Bangkok in late 1945, he recorded a tribute to Pridi in which he said that there had existed a unique situation wherein " the Supreme Allied Commander was exchanging vital military plans with the Head of a State technically at war with us ".

One of the anecdotal and possibly apocryphal tales told in support of Mountbatten Pink was the story of the cruiser HMS Kenya ( nicknamed " The Pink Lady " at the time due to her Mountbatten Pink paint ), which during Operation Archery covered a commando raid against installations on Vågsøy Island off the Norwegian coast.
