Odell was named for an early pioneer, William Odell, a native of Tennessee by way of California, who settled in the area in 1861.

In 1633, Richard sold the estate to William Alston and, after five hundred years, Odell village was no longer under the influence of a descendant of the family bearing the same name.

The island is named after William Odell Raymond, originally a magistrate from New South Wales who established himself as a squatter in Gippsland in the 1840s.

William Odell Raymond established a run in the area in 1842, and built his house, Strathfieldsaye, during 1848 – 54.

Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, the son of William Franklin Odell and Elizabeth Newell, Odell studied law at King ’ s College at was admitted an attorney in 1835 and a barrister in 1838.
