* May 17 – 28 – Atal Bihari Vajpayee, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, is elected the new prime minister of India, replacing P. V. Narasimha Rao of the Indian National Congress.

* Antarvedi, East Godavari ( Antarvedi is famous for the Laxmi Narasimha Swamy temple constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries.

There is also a temple of Lord Siva that is older than Narasimha Swamy temple.

The epic Bhagavatha Purana is the chronology of Vishnu's ten major incarnations ( there are in total twenty six incarnations ): Matsya ( fish ), Kurma ( turtle ), Varaha ( boar ), Narasimha ( lion-faced human ), Vamana ( an ascetic in the form of a midget ), Parasurama ( a warrior Brahmin ), Rama, Krishna, Gautam Buddha ( later buddhists separated themselves from Hindus ), Kalki ( a predicted warrior on a white horse who would come in this yuga ) whose appearance also signals the beginning of the end of the epoch.

Narasimha (, ) or Nrusimha ( न ृ स िं ह, Nṛsiṃha ), also spelled as Narasingh, Narsingh and Narasingha, whose name literally translates from Sanskrit as " Man-lion ", is an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu and one of Hinduism's most popular deities, as evidenced in early epics, iconography, and temple and festival worship for over a millennium.

There is also a short reference in the Mahabharata ( 3. 272. 56-60 ) and a Tapani Upanishad ( Narasimha tapani Upanisad ), earliest of Vaishnava Upanishads named in reference to him.

" This short reference is believed to have culminated in the full puranic story of this highly popular Narasimha form.

The story of Narasimha as described in the Bhagavata Purana is as follows:

In order to kill Hiranyakashipu and not upset the boon given by Brahma, the form of Narasimha is chosen.

Narasimha is neither one of these as he is a form of Vishnu incarnate as a part-human, part-animal.

Then, at the request of Brahma, Prahlada is presented to Narasimha, and finally he is calmed by the prayers of his devotee.

It is believed by followers that Narasimha protects his sincere devotees when they are in extreme danger.

Forms where Narasimha appears sitting in a yogic posture, or with the goddess Lakshmi are the exception to this rule, as Narasimha is taken as being more relaxed in both of these instances compared to his form when first emerging from the pillar to protect Prahlada.

Wherever I go Lord Narasimha is there.

* Narasimha indicates God's omnipresence and the lesson is that God is everywhere.

* Narasimha is known by the epithet " Mriga-Sharira " in Sanskrit which translates to Animal-Man.

From a philosophical perspective, Narasimha thus is a symbol of Advaita with man half representing the Jeevatma and the Lion half the Paramatman.

In South Indian art – sculptures, bronzes and paintings – Vishnu's incarnation as Narasimha is one of the most chosen themes and amongst Avatars perhaps next only to Rama and Krishna in popularity.

Lord Narasimha also appears as one of Hanuman's 5 faces, who is a significant character in the Ramayana as Lord Raam's ( Rama ) devotee.

This lion, flanked by five heroes ( viras ), often has been identified as an early depiction of Narasimha.

Guru Raghavendra Swamy is none other than Pralhadraja who was responsible for avatara of Lord Narasimha. Pralhadraja again took birth as Bhaleeka Raja in Dwapara yuga. Pralhadraja took avatara as Vyasathirtha in his third birth. Vyasathirtha was Rajaguru of Krishnadeveraya of Vijayanagara Empire. Vyasathirtha installed 732 Hanuman ( Anjaneya / Mukhyapranadavaru ) idols in various parts of the country and he also saved King from Kuha yoga. Vyasathirtha was respected and recognised as a great scholar, great saint and devine personality by all the kingdoms of India ( Including Mughal and Bahamani Empire ). The contemprories of Vyasathirtha were Surendra Theertharu, Raghunatha Theertharu, Raghuvarya Theertharu, Sripadarajaru ( teacher of Vyasarajaru ), Brhamanya Theertharu ( The guru of Vyasaraja who ordained him to sanyasa ) and Raghottama Theertharu. Vyasathirtha had a huge family of shishyas ( students ) in which the prominent personalities to name a few are Purandaradasaru, Kanakadasaru, Vadirajaru, Vijayeendra Theertharu, Somanatha Kaviof " VYASA YOGI CHARITAM ".

Two copper plates of the early Pallava dynasty have been found in the lake, traces its history to Langula Narasimha Deva ( Langulya Gajapathi Raju ) an Ganga Vanshi Orissa king, ( Oddiya / Oriya raju ).

Another inscription shows a Queen of the Eastern Ganga of Kalinga ( ancient Orissa ) ( 1137-56 AD ) covering the image with gold while a third inscription says the eastern Ganga King of Orissa, Narasimha Deva, built the main / central shrine in 1267 A. D. With more than 252 inscriptions in Oriya and Telugu describing the antecedents of the temple, it is a historically important monument.

He had an elder brother named Hiranyakashipu, who after having undertaken penances which made him incredibly powerful and invincible unless several conditions were met, was later slain by Narasimha, another avatar of Vishnu.

Narasimha Rao two weeks after the demolition on 6 December 1992, to ward off criticism against his government for having failed to protect the mosque, the commission in August 2005 finished hearing its last witness Kalyan Singh – who was Uttar Pradesh chief minister at the time of the demolition and was dismissed soon after.

This also suffered further when Achutha Raya ordered an invasion of Travancore to punish the Raja for having helped the rebel Vira Narasimha alias Chellappa.

Just as he lifted his axe to severe Shankara's head, Lord Vishnu as Narasimha entered the body OF Shankaracharya's disciple, Padmapada, who was a devotee of Narasimha, and fought the Kapalika, slayed him and thus freed the forest of Kapalikas.

He also said that, Mayon, in the previous yugas, as Narasimha, Rama, and Krishna take a body with 4 spans and so Kali in this yuga born with the body of same size and pushed himself out of earth.

Narasimha struck Sharabha with his body, it was Vishnu who groaned in pain and not Sharabha who was in an " adamantine body ".

Generally Vaishnava temples are dedicated to Keshava ( or to Chennakeshava, meaning " Beautiful Vishnu ") while a small number are dedicated to Lakshminarayana and Lakshminarasimha ( Narayana and Narasimha both being Avatars, or physical manifestations, of Vishnu ) with Lakshmi, consort of Vishnu, seated at his feet.

References to Narasimha are found in a wide variety of the Puranic scriptures, with seventeen versions of the main narrative, some in more detail than others.

" I will dance and melt for you, within my heart, to see you, I will sing in praise of you with tears in joy, I will search for Narasimha and I am a householder who still searches to reach you ( to attain Salvation ).

The final part deals with his efforts to kill his son Prahlada ( a devotee of Vishnu ) and his subsequent death at the hands of Narasimha.

Vajpayee and his economic team, led by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, continuing the policies initiated by the previous Congress government under P. V. Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh, pushed through major privatizations of big government corporations, the liberalization of trade under World Trade Organization guidelines, airline deregulation, foreign investment and ownership and allowed private companies such as Mahindra World City and Reliance to build Special Economic Zones where property developers could build new cities with world-class infrastructure for factories that export products.

Guhyatiguhya-Tantra equates god Vishnu's ten avatars with the ten Mahavidyas ; the man-lion incarnation Narasimha is described to have arisen from Chhinnamasta.

He rejoined the Congress under P V Narasimha Rao which he left in 1999 along with daughter Mehbooba Mufti to form his own party, Jammu and Kashmir People's Democratic Party.

The Marlu chicku is one deity of Halady which attracts a large number of people together with another temple of Laxmi Narasimha that has a seven foot stone statue.

This tribal god may have taken a fairly circuitous route to his present pinnacle, via absorption of local shakti traditions and merger with the growing popularity of the Narasimha and Purushottam forms of Vishnu in the region in the medieval era.

The temple plaque opens with a salutation to Purushottam, also titled Narasimha, suggesting a trend in Vaishnav tradition to stress the ugra ( violent ) aspect of Vishnu.

This possibly culminates with Jagannath, widely revered as Purushottam until the end of the 13th century, which had close connections with Narasimha who became popular in Orissa in the post-Gupta period.

Later he was to serve as Vice-President of India and then as a President of India starting 1987, where he had the unique distinction of working with four prime ministers, and appointing three of them: V P Singh, Chandra Shekhar and P V Narasimha Rao, during his five-year term, which saw the advent of coalition politics in India.

He first gained fame through his skill as an astrologer but his rise to national prominence came as a result of his association with Prime Minister Narasimha Rao.

Nrisimhastava is a work dealing with glory of god Narasimha ( half human and half lion ).

Congress formed the government with P. V. Narasimha Rao to become Prime Minister.

The economic liberalisation of 1991, initiated by then Indian prime minister P. V. Narasimha Rao and his finance minister Manmohan Singh in response to a balance-of-payments crisis, did away with the Licence Raj and ended many public monopolies, allowing automatic approval of foreign direct investment in many sectors.
