In later years, Shachter-Shalomi held the World Wisdom Chair at The Naropa Institute ; he is Professor Emeritus at both Naropa and Temple University.

The once-obscure Shangpa Kagyu, which was famously represented by the 20th century teacher Kalu Rinpoche, traces its history back to the Indian master Naropa via Niguma, Sukhasiddhi and Kyungpo Neljor.

Once Tagtshang Repa Ngawang Gyatso ( 1573 – 1651 ), a disciple of the 5th Gyalwang Drukpa Paksam Wangpo ( 1593 – 1641 ) and Drukpa Yongzin Ngawang Sangpo, was meditating at Ugyen dzong, a retreat cave near Kargil of Guru Padma Sambhava and Naropa, after his pilgrimage to the Swat Valley ( now in Pakistan ), when he received an invitation from King Jamyang Namgyal of Ladakh.

This incarnation of the Fugs included, at various times, guitarist and singer Steve Taylor who was also Allen Ginsberg's teaching assistant at the Naropa Institute, drummer and singer Coby Batty, bassist Mark Kramer, guitarist Vinny Leary ( who had contributed to the first two original Fugs albums ), and bassist / keyboardist Scott Petito.

A semester of Allen Ginsburg ’ s poetry seminar held at the Naropa Institute in Colorado was presented by Ruas, and for many years the station covered the annual New Year ’ s Eve celebratory poetry marathon at St. Mark ’ s Church.

The Tummo practices were first described in writing by the Indian yogi and Buddhist scholar Naropa, although the Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that the practice was actually taught by Shakyamuni Buddha and passed down orally until the time of Naropa.

* The Karma Kagyu " Simultaneously Arising as Merged " tradition-This is the tradition introduced by Gampopa with a main practice of the Six Yogas of Naropa.

Many subsequent Kagyu Karmapas have been particularly adept at one or more of these six yogic practices, which in Vajrayana tradition are held to have been given by the Buddha and were passed on through an unbroken lineage via Tilopa to Naropa, Marpa and Milarepa and on to the present day.
