In the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, Tummo belongs to the teachings of the Six Yogas of Naropa, a set of practices used to recognize the nature of the mind.

The first, the Dagpo Kagyu, encompasses those Kagyu schools that trace back to the Indian master Naropa via Marpa, Milarepa and Gampopa and consists of four major sub-sects: the Karma Kagyu, headed by a Karmapa, the Tsalpa Kagyu, the Barom Kagyu, and Pagtru Kagyu.

The once-obscure Shangpa Kagyu, which was famously represented by the 20th century teacher Kalu Rinpoche, traces its history back to the Indian master Naropa via Niguma, Sukhasiddhi and Kyungpo Neljor.

It was founded by Drogmi, a famous scholar and translator who had studied at the Vikramashila University directly under Naropa, Ratnakarashanti, Vagishvakirti and other great panditas from India for twelve years.

Among the many Buddhist lineages he studied, practiced and transmitted the three main lineages were the Lineage of the Profound Action transmitted by Maitreya / Asaṅga, Vasubandhu, the Lineage of Profound View transmitted by Manjushri / Nagarjuna, Chandrakirti, and the Lineage of Profound Experience transmitted by Vajradhara / Tilopa, Naropa.

Recognized both by Tibetan Buddhists and by other spiritual practitioners and scholars as a preeminent teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, he was a major, albeit controversial, figure in the dissemination of Tibetan Buddhism to the West, founding Vajradhatu and Naropa University and establishing the Shambhala Training method.

The poet W. S. Merwin had arrived that summer at the Naropa Institute and been told by Allen Ginsberg that he ought to visit the seminary.

A semester of Allen Ginsburg ’ s poetry seminar held at the Naropa Institute in Colorado was presented by Ruas, and for many years the station covered the annual New Year ’ s Eve celebratory poetry marathon at St. Mark ’ s Church.

The Tummo practices were first described in writing by the Indian yogi and Buddhist scholar Naropa, although the Tibetan Buddhist tradition holds that the practice was actually taught by Shakyamuni Buddha and passed down orally until the time of Naropa.

At the time of Trungpa Rinpoche ’ s death in 1987, Ray was professor of Buddhist Studies at Naropa University with, in addition, a half-time appointment in the Religious studies department at the University of Colorado.
