Crossing the Aniene and turning to the right, the path rises along the left face off the ravine and soon reaches the site of Nero's villa and of the huge mole which formed the lower end of the middle lake ; across the valley were ruins of the Roman baths, of which a few great arches and detached masses of wall still stand.

According to Bernard McGinn, these parts of the oracles were probably written by a Christian and incorporated " mythological language " in describing Nero's return.

The expensive and lavish decoration of the palace caused such scandal that it was demolished soon after Nero's death and public buildings such as the Baths of Titus and the Colosseum were built in its place.

Nero's Domus Aurea ( AD 64 – 69 ) was the first semi-private dwelling that possessed rooms that were given richly varied floor plans, shaped with niches and exedras ; sheathed in dazzling polished white marble, such curved surfaces concentrated or dispersed the daylight.

Suetonius mentions passingly that: " Nero's reign Punishments were also inflicted on the Christians, a sect professing a new and mischievous religious belief " but he doesn't explain for what they were punished.

Some modern historians theorize that Nero's decision to kill Agrippina was prompted by her plotting to set Gaius Rubellius Plautus ( Nero's maternal second cousin ) or Britannicus ( Claudius ' biological son ) on the throne.

An inquiry was set up under Nero's freedman, Polyclitus, and an excuse, that Suetonius had lost some ships, was found to relieve him of his command.

When he was recaptured, he was brought before the emperor and beaten and whipped, then coated with pitch and set alight ( as Christians had been in Nero's games ), and still he survived.

In defence of the identification of the group as the Domitii Ahenobarbi and of the boy as Gnaeus, Pollini has pointed out that Suetonius specifically mentions that Nero's father went " to the East on the staff of the young Gaius Caesar ".

However, John A. T. Robinson and other scholars argued for a much earlier dating, based on the fact that the New Testament writings make no mention of ( 1 ) the Great Fire of Rome ( A. D. 64 ), one of the most destructive fires in Roman history, which Emperor Nero blamed on the Christians, and led to the first major persecution of believers ; ( 2 ) the final years and deaths of Paul, who wrote most of the epistles, Peter, whom Catholics recognize as the first pope, and the other apostles ; ( 3 ) Nero's suicide ( A. D. 68 ); or ( 4 ) the total destruction of the temple in Jerusalem ( A. D. 70 ), which Robinson thought should certainly have appeared, considering the importance of that event for Jews and Christians of that time.

Nero's father was described by Suetonius as a murderer and a cheat who was charged by Emperor Tiberius with treason, adultery, and incest.
