The battle of the drib-drool continues, but most of New York's knowing sophisticates of Abstract Expressionism are stamping their feet impatiently in expectation of V ( for Vindication ) Day, September first, when Augustus Quasimodo's first one-man show opens at the Guggenheim.

Baseball writer Bill James, in The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, ranked Robinson as the 32nd greatest player of all time strictly on the basis of his performance on the field, noting that he was one of the top players in the league throughout his career.

By the Second World War, the taste of the American avant-garde in New York City swung decisively towards Abstract Expressionism with the support of key taste makers, including Peggy Guggenheim, Leo Steinberg and Clement Greenberg.

However, it should not be easily forgotten that Abstract Expressionism itself grew directly out of the meeting of American ( particularly New York ) artists with European Surrealists self-exiled during World War II.

Abstract expressionism arose during World War II and began to be showcased during the early forties at galleries in New York like The Art of This Century Gallery.

Besides the painters and sculptors of the period the New York School of Abstract expressionism also generated a number of supportive poets, like Frank O ' Hara and photographers like Aaron Siskind and Fred McDarrah, ( whose book The Artist's World in Pictures documented the New York School during the 1950s ), and filmmakers — notably Robert Frank — as well.

Although Abstract Expressionism is identified as a New York movement, Still's formative works were created during various teaching posts on the West Coast, first at Washington State University ( 1935 – 41 ).

He lived in New York for most of the 1950s, the height of Abstract Expressionism, but also a time when he became increasingly critical of the art world.

He praised similar movements abroad and, after the success of the Painters Eleven exhibition in 1956 with the American Abstract Artists at New York's Riverside Gallery, he travelled to Toronto to see the group's work in 1957.

Camille's great-grandson, Joachim Pissarro, is former Head Curator of Drawing and Painting at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and is now a professor in Hunter College's Art Department.

By the 1930s the place would evolve to become her greatest legacy, the Whitney Museum of American Art, on the site of today's New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.

Founded by New York based artist Mercedes Matter and her students the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture is an art school formed in the mid 1960s.

A bit earlier, on the West-coast, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine and Andy Warhol from NYC, Phillip Hefferton and Robert Dowd from Detroit ; Edward Ruscha and Joe Goode from Oklahoma City, and Wayne Thiebaud from California were included in the New Painting of Common Objects show.

The first museum established by the foundation was The Museum of Non-Objective Painting, in New York City.

This was the year that Franz Roh published his book on the subject, Nach Expressionismus: Magischer Realismus: Probleme der neuesten europäischen Malerei ( translated as After Expressionism: Magical Realism: Problems of the Newest European Painting ) and Gustav Hartlaub curated the seminal exhibition on the theme, entitled simply Neue Sachlichkeit ( translated as New Objectivity ), at the Kunsthalle Mannheim in Mannheim, Germany.

He was included in the exhibition A New Spirit in Painting at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2001 ; and held a solo show entitled Frank Auerbach Etchings and Drypoints 1954-2006 at the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, which toured to the Abbot Hall Art Gallery, Kendal, during 2007-08 ; and another solo show at the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, in 2009.

From 2004 until 2009, the art gallery American Painting, located on East 6th St., between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, exhibited the works of several New York and American artists, namely, Andrei Kushnir, Michele Martin Taylor, Carol Spils, Barbara Nuss, Joachim Marx, Stevens Jay Carter and Michael Francis.

In 1962 Thiebaud's work was included, along with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Edward Ruscha, and Robert Dowd, in the historically important and ground-breaking " New Painting of Common Objects ," curated by Walter Hopps at the Pasadena Art Museum.

After spending two years at Reed College, Portland, Oregon, and beginning his training as an artist with realist painter Willard Midgette, Munch attended the Portland Art Museum School and the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture.
