Areas of Nichinan are part of Hiba-Dogo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park.

*: Held the 3rd weekend of October in the former Obi Town, this Edo period festival features a procession of warriors, the traditional Nichinan Taihei dancem and princesses of the festival among the many public events.

As of 31 March 2008, 9 % of the total land area of the prefecture was designated as Natural Parks, namely the Kirishima-Yaku and Unzen-Amakusa National Parks ; Amami Guntō and Nichinan Kaigan Quasi-National Parks ; and Akune, Bōnoma, Fukiagehama, Imutaike, Koshikijima, Ōsumi Nanbu, Sendaigawa Ryūiki, Takakumayama, and Tokara Rettō Prefectural Natural Parks.

Several cherry trees planted on the bank of the tidal pond next to Portsmouth City Hall were the gift of Portsmouth's Japanese sister city of Nichinan — the hometown of Marquis Komura Jutarō, Japan's representative at the conference.

The city is served by the Nichinan Line of the JR Kyūshū railway system, which links it to the west to Shibushi in neighbouring Kagoshima Prefecture and to the north to the prefectural capital, Miyazaki.
