With Nirvana's success, the major record companies once again saw punk bands as potentially profitable.

Other grunge bands subsequently replicated Nirvana's success.

In the months preceding the event, Nirvana's Nevermind was released and became an international smash hit, therefore guaranteeing the success of the festival.

Indie rock has been identified as a reaction against the " macho " culture that developed in alternative rock in the aftermath of Nirvana's success.

In late 1993, Meat Puppets achieved mainstream popularity when Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, who became a fan after seeing them open for Black Flag, invited Cris and Curt to join him on MTV Unplugged for acoustic performances of " Plateau ", " Oh Me " and " Lake of Fire " ( all originally from Meat Puppets II ).

The genre rapidly lost mainstream interest from 1991 to 1993 with the rise of grunge and the release of albums such as Nirvana's Nevermind, but it has enjoyed revivals since the beginning of the new millennium with the Swedish sleaze metal movement and the retro styling of bands including The Darkness and Steel Panther.

The album was also critically well received and featured an alternative rock sound that pre-dated significant releases such as Nirvana's Nevermind and Pearl Jam's Ten, which would unexpectedly go on to break the genre into the mainstream.

Nirvana's bassist, and co-founder, Krist Novoselic cited Faith No More as a band that " paved the way for Nirvana " in the late 1980s.

Describing the various songs on Bleach, Christopher Sandford wrote: "' Paper Cuts ' includes a folk-influence melody and ponderous rhythm of an early Led Zeppelin number ; ' Mr. Moustache ' addressed itself on Nirvana's male fans ; ' Downer ' showed the same exceptional contempt for the group's audience ".

While signed to Lookout !, the band continued to release an album a year: 1995's Pile Up ( notable for its various cover songs, including Ned Sublette's " Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other " and Nirvana's " Smells Like Teen Spirit " ( covered as " Smells Like Queer Spirit ")), 1996's Wish I'd Taken Pictures ( featuring the single " I Really Wanted You ", the music video of which played once on MTV ) and the 1997 B-sides compilation More Lovin ' From Our Oven.

A studio version of the song was recorded at Nirvana's final session, on January 30, 1994 at Robert Lang Studios in Seattle, Washington, but remained locked away from fans for years following Cobain's death.

The tracklists are also of interest, revealing, for example, that Cobain had intended to release " girl " and " boy " sides of Nirvana's breakthrough album Nevermind, with songs such as " In Bloom " and " Lithium " on the girl side, and songs like " Sliver " and " Polly " on the boy side.
