Nymphs were the frequent target of satyrs.

Nymphs often accompanied various gods and goddesses, and were the frequent target of lusty satyrs.

For example, the worship of Pan and the Nymphs was common in many areas of Attica such as Marathon, Parnes and Ymittos.

A poem of Callimachus to the goddess " who amuses herself on mountains with archery " imagines some charming vignettes: according to Callimachus, at three years old, Artemis, while sitting on the knee of her father, Zeus, asked him to grant her six wishes: to remain always a virgin ; to have many names to set her apart from her brother Apollo ; to be the Phaesporia or Light Bringer ; to have a bow and arrow and a knee-length tunic so that she could hunt ; to have sixty " daughters of Okeanos ", all nine years of age, to be her choir ; and for twenty Amnisides Nymphs as handmaidens to watch her dogs and bow while she rested.

Dii, Lares, Nymphs and Genii, were the main types of divinity worshiped, known from the Latin epigraphy, although many names are recorded in the Lusitanian or Celtiberian languages.

Besides these works, associated with Praxiteles by reference to notices in ancient writers, there are numerous copies of the Roman age, statues of Hermes, of Dionysus, of Aphrodite of Satyrs and Nymphs and the like, in which a varied expression of Praxitelean style may be discerned.

According to legend, the Nymphs planted elms on the tomb, in the Thracian Chersonese, of " great-hearted Protesilaus " (« μεγάθυμου Πρωτεσιλάου »), elms that grew to be the tallest in the known world ; but when their topmost branches saw far off the ruins of Troy, they immediately withered, so great still was the bitterness of the hero buried below.

Later on, the project would be renamed The Sea Nymphs.

Nymphs and monsters blur, for Hesiod relates that Phorcys was wed to the " beautiful-cheeked " Ceto, whose name is merely the feminine of the monstrous Cetus, to whom Andromeda was due to be sacrificed.

In the nineteenth century they took such titles as " Nymphs Bathing " and " Diana the Huntress " and were to be found at such places as the " Hall of Rome " in Great Windmill Street, London.

Nymphs are personifications of the creative and fostering activities of nature, most often identified with the life-giving outflow of springs: as Walter Burkert ( Burkert 1985: III. 3. 3 ) remarks, " The idea that rivers are gods and springs divine nymphs is deeply rooted not only in poetry but in belief and ritual ; the worship of these deities is limited only by the fact that they are inseparably identified with a specific locality.

When Eetion, father of Andromache, is killed by Achilles during the Trojan War, the Mountain Nymphs plant elms on his tomb (« περὶ δὲ πτελέoι εφύτεψαν νύμφαι ὀρεστιάδες, κoῦραι Διὸς αἰγιόχoιo ».

It is thought that the current structure was originally the Shrine of the Four Nymphs ( Tetranymphon ), a nymphaeum built by Hadrian during the construction of Aelia Capitolina in 135, and mentioned in Byzantine works such as the 7th century Chronicon Paschale ; other nymphaeum built by Hadrian, such as that at Sagalassos, are very similar.

* Alcmene, Semele, Alope: Nymphs who were visited by the Olympian gods, they are typical of the old days when the Olympians had free passage through the skies ( lines 558-9 ).

The allegory in the second part of Canto IX sees Camões describing, the scene between the Nautas-and the Nymphs that were expecting them-prepared by Venus.

Also making an appearance in 1991 was the debut release by the Cardiacs spin-off, The Sea Nymphs.

1998 also saw renewed activity by The Sea Nymphs, with the " Appealing To Venus " single reissued with extra tracks by Org Records, and a rare concert at the Camden Falcon in north London.

The albums featured cover versions of Smith-penned material ( originally for Cardiacs, The Sea Nymphs, Spratleys Japs and OceanLandWorld ) by musicians including The Magic Numbers, Steven Wilson, Oceansize, Robert White / Andy Partridge, Sidi Bou Said and North Sea Radio Orchestra as well as former Cardiacs including Hayes himself ( as Mikrokosmos ), Torabi ( as Knifeworld ), William D. Drake, Mark Cawthra and Peter Tagg ( with The Trudy ).

The " S & M " single features artwork by Lori Wening who would go on to become the vocalist ( under the name Inger Lorre ) of the proto-grunge LA punk band The Nymphs.
