The primary operating systems in use on current IBM mainframes include z / OS ( which followed MVS and OS / 390 ), z / VM ( previously VM / CMS ), z / VSE ( which is in the DOS / 360 lineage ), z / TPF ( a successor of Airlines Control Program ), and Linux on System z such as SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and others.

There are software-based emulators for the System / 370, System / 390, and System z hardware, including FLEX-ES and the freely available Hercules emulator which runs under Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

Like OS / 390, z / OS combines a number of formerly separate, related products, some of which are still optional.

Up through Version 1. 5, z / OS itself could start in either 31-bit ESA / 390 or 64-bit z / Architecture mode, so it could function on older hardware albeit without 64-bit application support on those machines.

VWLC and EWLC customers only pay for peak monthly z / OS usage, not for full machine capacity as with the previous OS / 390 operating system.

To be eligible for sub-capacity licensing, a z / OS customer must be running in 64-bit mode ( which requires z / Architecture hardware ), must have completely eliminated OS / 390 from the system, and must e-mail IBM monthly sub-capacity reports.

OS / 390 is an IBM operating system for the System / 390 IBM mainframe computers.

An additional benefit of the OS / 390 packaging concept was to improve reliability, availability and serviceability ( RAS ) for the operating system, as the number of different combinations of elements that a customer could order and run was drastically reduced.

In December 2001 IBM extended OS / 390 to include support for 64-bit zSeries processors and added various other improvements, and the result is now named z / OS.

Modern Windows operating system versions are based on the newer Windows NT kernel that was originally intended for OS / 2.

A GUI, called the Presentation Manager ( PM ), was not available with OS / 2 until version 1. 1, released in 1988.

Both retained the rights to use OS / 2 and Windows technology developed up to the termination of the agreement ; Windows NT, however, was to be written anew, mostly independently ( see below ).

This was a major improvement: it featured a new, object-oriented GUI, the Workplace Shell ( WPS ), that included a desktop and was considered by many to be OS / 2's best feature.

This was one of the reasons for the chronic shortage of OS / 2 drivers for the latest devices.
