Combating crime and providing safety programs in the community, Oak Park's police department is the third largest in the state.

Oak Park's educational history began with the Clinton School, a one-room schoolhouse on property donated by Barney Clinton in the early 1900s.

During the Manhattan Project enriched uranium was given the codename oralloy, a shortened version of Oak Ridge alloy, after the location of the plants where the uranium was enriched.

The uses of these islands vary: Davids ' Island, the former location of the U. S. Army ’ s Fort Slocum, is currently unoccupied but is slated for use as passive parkland ; Glen Island is a County park for passive and active recreation ; Huckleberry Island is largely undeveloped and has one of the largest rookeries for some shore bird species in western Long Island Sound ; Columbia Island was the former site of CBS television broadcast antennas and is currently unoccupied ; Echo Island is used by a private yacht club ; Execution Rocks is the site of a 19th century lighthouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places ; Pea Island is owned by Huguenot Yacht Club but remains undeveloped ; Goose Island is undeveloped ; Clifford, Harrison and Tank Islands are part of a nature preserve and city park ; and Oak and Pine Islands are used as private residences.

Although ' American Stores ' food divisions retained an operating presence in their geographical locations and other centralized marketing, merchandising and other staff functions were relocated between 1992 and 1998 from Oak Brook, Illinois to Salt Lake City to occupy the then-new American Stores Tower, pharmacy operations were relocated to Scottsdale Arizona with certain pharmacy systems-related resources continuing to operate from the Chicago area after being relocated to 3030 Cullerton Drive in Franklin Park, Illinois, the location that previously served as Osco Drug's divisional headquarters prior to its relocation to its new purpose-built office facilities at 1818 Swift Drive in Oak Brook, Illinois ' Windsor Office Park during the early 1970s.

The most notable location used was that of the Ministry Field where Liz and Simon discover the Time Barrier – this was in fact the Burnt Farm Army Camp near Goff's Oak, Hertfordshire.

According to Bede, some bishops and other representatives of the nearest province of the Britons met Augustine at a location at the border of the Kingdom of Kent, which was thereafter known as Augustine's Oak.

Oak Park has an active arts community, resulting in part from its favorable location adjacent to Chicago ( 7 miles west of the " Loop ").

The community later moved in 1911 to its present location between Oak Bluffs town and Edgartown.

In 1942, Jemez Springs was the second choice ( after Oak City, Utah ) for the location of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, the proposed Manhattan Project research laboratory, but Los Alamos was chosen instead.

* Oak Mountain – A location north of Speculator.

Oak Mountain is the location of the Oak Mountain Ski Center, located just north of the four corners.

* The Bridges – A location at the Oak Orchard River and Marsh Creek, also known as " Three Bridges ," referring to the bridges that carry Routes NY-98 and NY-18 over the river.

* Waterport Station – A location on the north side of the Oak Orchard River, north of Waterport on NY-279.

* Black Oaks Corner – A location marked by the intersection of Harvey Hill Rd and Black Oak Road.

In 1767 William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina ( 1765 — 1771 ), alerted to the heavy bloodshed in this part of western North Carolina, traveled to the area and negotiated peace treaty with the Cherokee, establishing a boundary line between a location near Greenville, South Carolina the highest point on White Oak Mountain ( renamed Tryon Peak by the settlers ).

The nearby mining pit was recently closed, with active operations moved to the east of Burr Oak State Park, but the loading station is still at the old site because of the location of the railroad.

* 1972 – Southern Airways Flight 49 from Birmingham, Alabama is hijacked and, at one point, is threatened with crashing into the nuclear installation at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The Major Oak was featured on the 2005 BBC TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the natural wonders of the Midlands.

These include the Otto Erdesz ' cutaway ' viola, which has one shoulder cut out to make shifting easier ; the ' Oak Leaf ' viola, which has two extra bouts ; viol-shaped violas such as Joseph Curtin's ' Evia ' model, which also utilizes a moveable neck and a maple-veneered carbon fibre back, to reduce weight: violas played in the same manner as cellos ( see vertical viola ); and the eye-catching " Dalí-esque " shapes of both Bernard Sabatier's violas in fractional sizes-which appear to have melted-and David Rivinus ' ' Pellegrina ' model violas.

* A team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory led by Charles Coryell discovers chemical element 61, the only one still missing between 1 and 96 on the periodic table, which they will name promethium.

In 1984 Hampton University dedicated a Booker T. Washington Memorial on campus near the historic Emancipation Oak, establishing, in the words of the University, " a relationship between one of America's great educators and social activists, and the symbol of Black achievement in education.

In just one of these 108 larger designations, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, there were for example at least " 167 known contaminant release sites " in one of the three subdivisions of the site.

* The Ivenack Oak which is one of the largest trees in Europe is located in Pomerania, Germany and is approximately 800 years old.

Kett's council, which consisted of representatives from the Hundreds of Norfolk and one representative from Suffolk met under the Oak of Reformation to administer the camp, issuing warrants to obtain provisions and arms and arrest members of the gentry.

According to one source the Oak of Reformation was cut down by Norwich City Council in the 1960s to make way for a car park, although Reg Groves wrote in the 1940s that had already been destroyed.

Oak Bluffs enjoys a reputation as one of the more active night-life towns on the island for both residents and tourists, and is also a " wet " town.

On May 4, 1865, one of the last significant Confederate armies was surrendered by General Richard Taylor ( general ) under the " Surrender Oak ".

John Grisham attended first grade at Black Oak Elementary School for one semester, and his novel A Painted House is set in Black Oak and the surrounding area.

Besides nearby downtown Ojai, Oak View is the only other town in the Ojai Valley with a discernible " downtown ", which has developed along the Ventura Avenue / Highway 33 corridor, and includes a post office, a grocery store and a grocery mart, one bank, a Thai restaurant, a coffee house / restaurant, a Mexican restaurant, a pizza parlor, two automobile repair shops, two tire shops, two self-serve gasoline stations, two coffee shops, a computer repair shop, an equipment rental yard, several hair stylists, a pet supplies store, a bar, a liquor store, a walk-in medical office, a real estate office, a car wash, a laundromat, a used car dealership, a tanning salon, a Sheriff's post, a video store, and other service and retail oriented businesses.

There is one school in Oak View, Arnez Elementary ( aka, Sunset Elementary ), which is located on the south western portion of the town, at 400 Sunset.

Oxford has two elementary schools: Quaker Farms School ( kindergarten through second grade ) and Oxford Center School ( third through fifth grade ); one middle school: Great Oak Middle School ( sixth through eighth grade ); and Oxford High School.

" Whereas, there is a certaine parcel of land situated on the West side of Delaware Bay the which hath been certified by the Court at the Horekill and laide out for William Burton the saide Land being called the Long Neck lying on the South side of Rehoboth Bay and on the North side of the Greate River beginning at a point of woods and running West up the Greate River one thousand perches to a White Oak at the head of a small creek called Indian Cabin Creek and from thence North three hundred and fifty perches to a White Oak standing by a creek side called Middle Creek with a line of marked trees and from thence bounder upon the aforesaid Bay to the first bounded point Southeast one thousand perches containing One Thousand Acres of Land.
