As a physical basis, Kepler drew by analogy on William Gilbert's theory of the magnetic soul of the Earth from De Magnete ( 1600 ) and on his own work on optics.

Published in 1600, Gilbert's work, De Magnete, helped to establish magnetism as a science.

He adapted Booth Tarkington's Monsieur Beaucaire ( 1919, with music by André Messager ) as a highly successful light opera and Jean Gilbert's Die Frau im Hermelin ( 1922, The Lady of the Rose ) and Katja, die Tänzerin ( 1925 ), as well as Leo Fall's Madame Pompadour ( 1923 ).

Labouchère's claims to being impartial were ridiculed by his critics, including W. S. Gilbert ( who had been an object of Labouchère's theatrical criticism ) in Gilbert's comic opera His Excellency ( see illustration at right ).

Much of the satiric spirit ( albeit in a greatly refined form ) of the original ballad opera can be found in Gilbert's contribution to the Savoy operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, and the more pastoral form of ballad opera is imitated, or at least emulated, in one of Gilbert and Sullivan's early works, The Sorcerer.

Also in 1873, dramatist W. S. Gilbert approached Rosa about producing a short comic opera based on one of Gilbert's Bab Ballads, " Trial by Jury: An Operetta ".

" Goldberg says that it is " dainty, simple and quite in the vein of Gilbert's words, to which, as in almost every later instance, Sullivan's setting provides an original rhythmic piquancy.

Gilbert's Cosmo Dog Park has twice made Dog Fancy magazine's list of top dog parks in the nation since opening in 2006, including being named Dog Park of the Year in 2007.

Gilbert's syndrome produces an elevated level of unconjugated bilirubin in the bloodstream but normally has no serious consequences.

Gilbert's syndrome has, however, been linked to an increased risk of gallstones.

The Manchester Guardian concurred: " Mr. Gilbert's tendency to over-elaboration has nowhere shown itself so obtrusively .... Mr. Gilbert has introduced too many whimsical ideas which practically bear no relation to the story proper ".

Outside the game show genre, Gilbert's voice has been heard on the CBS television special Circus of the Stars, in People's Choice Awards and Emmy Awards ceremonies, and on episodes of the animated series The Angry Beavers and Johnny Bravo.

She has also worked at the Royal National Theatre: playing as a junior member of the company in 1975, as Freda in Peter Hall's Old Vic production of John Gabriel Borkman ( starring Ralph Richardson, Peggy Ashcroft and Wendy Hiller ) and as Maggie in W. S. Gilbert's Engaged ; in 1995, as Lady Politic Would-Be in Matthew Warchus's Volpone ; and in 2003 as Dotty Otley in the NT's touring ( and London ) revival of Noises Off.

For the musical that has run for more than 40 years at the Charlottetown Festival which focuses on Anne and Gilbert's relationship, the CD recording features as Gilbert.
