In Canada, " Ogopogo " has also been a name given to items such as boats and canoes.
The filmmakers were about to name the creature in the film after the Ogopogo until an Aboriginal protested that use of the name compromised Aboriginal religion, although other Aboriginals encouraged the use of the name " Ogopogo.
Many locals still called it Ogopogo Island, but at the request of the Kelowna Chamber of Commerce, in the 1950s the name of Rattlesnake Island was confirmed.
Some, especially those associated with the tourism industry in the Okanagan Valley, came to call the island " Ogopogo Island ", and the name stuck for many years.
