On 1 January 1964, a major municipal merger took place: the neighbouring municipalities of Leinstrand ( population: 4, 193 ), Byneset ( population: 2, 049 ), Strinda ( population: 44, 600 ), and Tiller ( population: 3, 595 ) were all merged with the city of Trondheim ( population: 56, 982 ), which just about doubled the population of the municipality.
