Oscar Zeta Acosta ( April 8, 1935 – disappeared 1974 ) was an American attorney, politician, minor novelist and Chicano Movement activist, perhaps best known for his friendship with the American author Hunter S. Thompson, who characterized him as his Samoan Attorney, Dr. Gonzo, in his acclaimed novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
He collaborated with then-wife Linda Thompson on the song " I Have Nothing ", sung by Whitney Houston in the 1992 film The Bodyguard ; the couple also appeared in the film's Oscars scene as the Oscar conductor and an Academy member.
Thompson based Gonzo on friend Oscar Zeta Acosta.
He was elected president of the Climbers ' Club in 1913, and he organised the Pen-y-Pass gatherings that propelled the advancement of rock climbing and included such technical luminaries as J. M. Archer Thompson, George Leigh Mallory, Siegfried Herford, John Percy Farrar and Oscar Eckenstein.
