In 1974, the same year as the PDFLP changed its name into the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( DFLP ), it acted as a strong supporter of the 1974 Ten Point Program.

The PDFLP soon gained a reputation as the most intellectual of the Palestinian fedayeen groups, and drew heavily on Marxist-Leninist theory to explain the situation in the Middle East.

In May – June 1969, the Palestinian Revolutionary Left League and the Palestine Popular Liberation Organization merged into PDFLP.

In 1969, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( DFLP ) formed as a separate, ostensibly Maoist, organization under Nayef Hawatmeh and Yasser Abd Rabbo, initially as the PDFLP.

What may have helped Jibril was Hawatmeh's own 1969 defection from the PFLP to form the Popular Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( PDFLP, later without the " Popular "), after Habash tried to compensate for some of the problems that had caused Jibril's exit.

In early 1968, a leftist, supposedly Maoist, faction headed by Hawatmeh broke away from PFLP to form the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine ( DFLP, initially PDFLP ).

He believed that the PFLP had become, under the guidance of George Habash, too focused on military matters, and wanted to make the PDFLP a more grassroots and more ideologically focused organization.
