This was expanded over time to include data communications, first by circuit switched transport, then packet data transport via GPRS ( General Packet Radio Services ) and EDGE ( Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution or EGPRS ).

GPRS extends the GSM Packet circuit switched data capabilities and makes the following services possible:

* The Packet radio multiple access ( PRMA ) method for combined circuit switched voice communication and packet data.

* Packet switched network

* Packet switched systems such as Ethernet or IP

The International Packet Switch Stream ( IPSS ) is an international X. 25 network service launched by the international division of BT to which PSS was linked to other packet switched networks around the world.

The international collection of X. 25 providers, using the X. 25 protocol suite was colloquially known as " the Packet switched network " in the 1980s and into the beginning of the 1990s.

Since 2006, UMTS networks in many countries have been or are in the process of being upgraded with High Speed Downlink Packet Access ( HSDPA ), sometimes known as 3. 5G.

* Circuit Emulation Service is an emerging telecommunication technology to transmit legacy TDM or ATM services over Packet Switched Network ( PSN ) such as Ethernet, IP or MPLS networks

* Packet over SONET / SDH, a communications protocol for transferring packets over fiber networks

Resilient Packet Ring is a new technology for packet-switched self-healing ring networks.

* Mega-frame Initialization Packet, an MPEG-2 Transport Stream packet used for synchronization in DVB-T single-frequency networks

* Interactive Terminal Protocol, an early Packet Assembler / Disassembler protocol for use on X. 25 networks

High-Speed Downlink Packet Access ( HSDPA, also known as High-Speed Data Packet Access ) is 3G ( third generation ) mobile telephony communications protocol in the High-Speed Packet Access ( HSPA ) family, also dubbed, which allows networks based on Universal Mobile Telecommunications System ( UMTS ) to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity.

The operator currently operates 3GPP Long Term Evolution ( LTE ), High Speed Packet Access ( HSPA ) and GSM networks in Canada.

Such " dual ring " networks include Spatial Reuse Protocol, Fiber Distributed Data Interface ( FDDI ), and Resilient Packet Ring.

Resilient Packet Ring ( RPR ), also known as IEEE 802. 17, is a standard designed for the optimized transport of data traffic over optical fiber ring networks.

It is similar in function to the Packet Assembler / Disassemblers used on X. 25 networks, with the addition of a modem to convert baseband digital signals to audio tones.

Metro Ethernet can also utilise Link aggregation or Resilient Packet Ring where appropriate to add link redundancy and recovery in distribution networks.

Countermeasures such as complex firewalls ; Stateful Packet Inspection ; network address translation, the threat of firewalking, and countermeasures thereof ; intrusion detection and prevention ; and virtual private networks are not discussed.

As a result, schemes such as Partial Packet Discard ( PPD ) and Early Packet Discard ( EPD ) have been created that will discard a whole series of cells until the next packet starts.

ARP has been implemented in many combinations of network and overlaying internetwork technologies, such as IPv4, Chaosnet, DECnet and Xerox PARC Universal Packet ( PUP ) using IEEE 802 standards, FDDI, X. 25, Frame Relay and Asynchronous Transfer Mode ( ATM ), IPv4 over IEEE 802. 3 and IEEE 802. 11 being the most common cases.
