This group was rounded out by characters at two locations frequented by the trio: John Comer and Jane Freeman as Sid and Ivy, the quarrelling husband-and-wife owners of the local café ; and Blake Butler and Rosemary Martin as Mr. Wainwright and Mrs. Partridge, the librarians having a not-so-secret affair.

Regular subplots in the first decade of the show included: Sid and Ivy bickering over the management of the café, Mr Wainwright and Mrs Partridge having a secret love affair that everyone knows about, Wally trying to get away from Nora's watchful eye, Foggy's exaggerated war stories, and Compo's schemes to win the affections of Nora Batty.

The plot then turns to Mrs Partridge, wife of the schoolteacher, who has discovered that Jenny gave birth to a bastard and had mistakenly

Mrs Partridge immediately suspects her husband and physically assaults him.

Now that they are poor, Mrs Partridge regrets her accusations, and begs Mrs Blifil to intercede with her brother to restore Mr Partridge's annuity, but he refuses.

Mrs Partridge dies soon after and her husband, being deprived of his annuity, his school and his wife, leaves the area.

The Partridge Family house, located on the same street, was used as the home of Mrs. Elkins ( a Mitchell neighbor ).

Prior to The Partridge Family the house facade was used by the characters of Mr. and Mrs. Kravitz on Bewitched.

In the Partridge story, an aristocratic family living in Park Lane is searching for a lost dog, and an American answers the advertisement with a shaggy dog that he has found and personally brought across the Atlantic, only to be received by the butler at the end of the story who takes one look at the dog and shuts the door in his face saying " But not so shaggy as that, sir!

The show featured an Alan Partridge tie and blazer badge set which, like the Alan Partridge face mask, was produced but never marketed-instead the famous " Tie and Blazer Badge Set " was included as part of a Boxed Set of videos released towards the end of the 1990s.

Eric Partridge, for example, provides a very different story, as do William and Mary Morris in The Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins.

According to Partridge and the Morrises, the archetypical shaggy dog story involves an advertisement placed in The Times announcing a search for a shaggy dog.

Partridge particularly needed the medication to cope with the grinding monotony of concert touring, which he had always hated, but had endured for the good of the band.

Partridge later claimed in a press interview that he and Colin were going to sack Gregory anyway because of his sullen attitude during the recordings, and that they had waited for him for six years to write the orchestral arrangements, and had finally told him that they would not let him stop the project.

It is some measure of how fond of him the XTC fanbase were that they slammed Moulding & Partridge for forcing his departure on the band's official forum — and some measure of their mutual respect for their fans and Gregory that the criticism went uncensored.

The three got back together for a charity reunion of their Dukes of Stratosphear alter-egos years later, and in late 2006 Partridge revealed that he and Gregory had rekindled their friendship.
