There have been two major discoveries of inscriptions that may be related to the Proto-Sinaitic script, the first in the winter of 1904 – 1905 in Sinai by Hilda and Flinders Petrie, dated to circa 1700-1400 BCE, and more recently in 1999 in Middle Egypt by John and Deborah Darnell, dated to the 18th century BCE.

The first precision measurements of the pyramid were made by Egyptologist Sir Flinders Petrie in 1880 – 82 and published as The Pyramids and Temples of Gizeh.

Thus, Petrie ’ s work has shown correlations between tail ornamentation, mating success and increased survival ability in both the ornamented males and their offspring.

The first surveys and excavations of the 19th century, and the extensive work of Flinders Petrie, have been able to show a little of the ancient capital's former glory.

In 1952 he began freelance work for the children's comic The Beano, drawing series like Little Plum, Minnie the Minx ( started in 1953, taken over by Jim Petrie in 1961 ), The Three Bears and The Bash Street Kids ( initially called When the Bell Rings ).
