The biggest of them on an extinct volcano is protected in the Phanom Rung historical park.

Because Phanom Rung is a beautiful and important historical site, the province also organizes an annual festival on the first weekends of April when a colourful parade is held following ancient royal Khmer tradition as well as a sound and light show at the Phanom Rung Sanctuary.

The provincial seal shows the Phanom Rung sandstone temple, a Hindu shrine of the Shivaite sect.

These sites would have formed part of the network of Khmer infrastructure centred on Prasat Phanom Rung.

The road used the Ta Muen Thom pass over the Dongrek mountains, and the first major stop was the Phanom Rung temple.

Consequently, a number of temples influenced by ancient Khmer art were found in Isan, most notably in southern part, at Phanom Rung and Phimai, which lie on the so-called Ancient Khmer Highway, the direct link to Angkor.

Phanom Rung (), or, with its full name, Prasat Hin Phanom Rung ( – Phanom Rung Stone Castle ), or Prasat Phnom Rong in Khmer, is a Khmer temple complex set on the rim of an extinct volcano at above sea level, in Buriram province in the Isan region of Thailand.

The Phanom Dong Rak Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the area of the range located in Sisaket Province.

This round-the-clock aerial effort was directed by " Operation Igloo White ", run out of Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.

It was originally administrated from Udon Thani, but in 1907 it became a district ( amphoe ) of Nakhon Phanom Province.

The name Nakhon Phanom, meaning " city of mountains ", was given to the city by King Rama I.

Located in the northeastern ( Isan ) region of the country, on the banks of the river Mekong, it was formerly as district of Nakhon Phanom Province.

The new Infiltration Surveillance Center ( ISC ) was located at Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, nine miles ( 14 km ) west of Nakhon Phanom city on the banks of the Mekong River.

This intelligence was delivered from Nakhon Phanom to the Seventh's headquarters at Ton Son Nhut Air Base, where it issued the strike orders.

The seat of the vicariate was at Ban Nonseng, Nakhon Phanom Province.

It was reconstituted and reactivated 8 April 1966 at Udon RTAFB, Thailand, and operated from Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, from 15 April 1966-22 September 1975.

Ajahn Mun and Ajahn Sao went on pilgrimage together in 1905 and venerated the Phra That Phanom shrine, a center of Theravada Buddhism for centuries, most sacred to the Lao people.

There are no mountains within Nakhon Phanom itself ; the limestone mountains are concentrated in the city of Thakhek of Laos, which is on the other side of the Mekong.

American and Thai forces established a base at Nakhon Phanom where the Thai military hosted the 56th Air Commando Wing which conducted special operations against both the Ho Chi Minh Trails in Laos and carried out counter insurgency operations against Thai Communist forces while conducting search and rescue operations primarily within Laos and North Vietnam.

The Phra That Phanom temple fair is held every February, on which occasion many locals pilgrimate to the temple to pay homage.

The third Thai – Lao Friendship Bridge (, connecting Thakhek to Nakhon Phanom, has been opened for traffic on November 11, 2011.

Of these Phimai together with Phanom Rung and Mueang Tam, as well as Phu Phrabat were accepted for consideration in January 2006 The Nation UNESCO

In the interior, two predominantly mainland national parks, Khao Phanom Bencha and Than Bokk-horani, offer inland scenic attractions including waterfalls and caves, and opportunities for trekking, birdwatching and eco-tours.

USAF aircraft operating out of Nakhon Phanom Air Base, Korat Air Base and U-Tapao Air Base in Thailand were also overhead for the duration of the helicopter evacuation.

Lt. Col Johnston selected Nakhon Phanom Royal Thai Air Force Base ( NKP ) for operations in the Steel Tiger portion of the Ho Chi Minh Trail between Nape Pass and Tchepone area in the Lao Panhandle.

The Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge began construction in March 2009 linking Nakhon Phanom province in northeastern Thailand and Khammouan province in Laos.

In what is considered as present day Isan another Indianized kingdom of Si Kottaboon rose with the capital of Nakhon Phanom.

In 1982 the Fine Arts Department found many human and elephant skeletons and swords in Phanom Thuan District.

Neighboring provinces are ( from south clockwise ) Amnat Charoen, Yasothon, Roi Et, Kalasin, Sakon Nakhon and Nakhon Phanom.

Nakhon Phanom () is one of the north-eastern provinces ( changwat ) of Thailand.

The provincial capital, the city of Nakhon Phanom, is located directly at the banks of the Mekong.

Nakhon Phanom should then mean a city where you can see mountains.

Between 1967 and 1971, most of the communists were defeated and towards the end of the Vietnam War, American forces moved their Indochinese military operations to Nakhon Phanom.

Another point of interest: Ho Chi Minh resided between 1928 and 1931 at Ban Nachok, a small village on the road between the airbase and Nakhon Phanom.
