Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895.

Several of the sights on her trip inspired her, and they found their way into her poem, including the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the " White City " with its promise of the future contained within its alabaster buildings ; the wheat fields of America's heartland Kansas, through which her train was riding on July 16 ; and the majestic view of the Great Plains from high atop Zebulon's Pikes Peak.

The Pony Express was a mail delivery system of the Leavenworth & Pike's Peak Express Company of 1849 which in 1850 became the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company.

Further finds in 1859 prompted the Pikes Peak Gold Rush lasting until 1867 ; over 1. 25 million troy ounces ( 39 t ) of gold were produced in those eight years.

Gold was found in Leadville, on the Arkansas River, in the 1860s ; Leadville was the site of the single richest placer gold strike in the entire Pikes Peak gold rush.

Cripple Creek is a former gold mining camp located southwest of Colorado Springs near the base of Pikes Peak.

In 2006 Cripple Creek broke ground on the new Pikes Peak Heritage Center.

As Harriman predicted, once the first flight succeeds, many seek to invest in his venture to make more flights using a catapult launcher built on Pikes Peak.

Effigy Mounds is adjacent to the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, the Driftless Area National Wildlife Refuge, the Yellow River State Forest, and a short distance to the south, Pikes Peak State Park.
