" Holm made a stir as Lenny in the first ever performance of Pinter's masterpiece The Homecoming.

As part of a double bill with Pinter's first play, The Room, The Dumb Waiter was first produced at the Hampstead Theatre Club, in the London Borough of Camden, on 21 January 1960.

* 1987 – Robert Altman directed a made-for-TV feature film version of The Dumb Waiter, starring John Travolta and Tom Conti, filmed in Canada and first televised in the United States on WABC-TV on 12 May 1987, as part of Altman's two-part series entitled Basements ; part one is Pinter's first play The Room.

Between 2 February and 24 March 2007, Isaacs played Ben, opposite Lee Evans ( Gus ), in the critically acclaimed 50th-anniversary production of Harold Pinter's The Dumb Waiter, at Trafalgar Studios, in London, his first theatre performance since appearing in The Force of Change ( 2000 ).

The first production of 2007 was Pinter's People, a compilation of Harold Pinter sketches of the past 40 years, staged by a company of four, led by Bill Bailey ; later productions of that year were The Lady from Dubuque ( Albee ), starring Maggie Smith ; David Suchet in The Last Confession ; and The Country Wife, starring Toby Stephens, Patricia Hodge and David Haig.

In 1960, he played Aston in the first production of Harold Pinter's The Caretaker at the Arts Theatre, in London, prior to transferring to the West End's Duchess Theatre on 30 May 1960.

Kenneth Tynan railed against the ' gratuitous obscurity ' of Harold Pinter's poetic 1975 play when it was first produced by Peter Hall at the National starring John Gielgud as the supplicant versifier Spooner and Ralph Richardson as his host Hirst, patron and supporter of the arts.

He is also playing Max in Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, which is the first Pinter work to be produced there.

The first of Pinter's three film collaborations with Losey, which also include Accident ( 1967 ) and The Go-Between ( 1970 ), The Servant is a tightly-constructed psychological dramatic film about the relationships among the four central characters examining issues relating to class, servitude, and the ennui of the upper classes.

As Bob Bows observes in his review of the 2008 Germinal Stage Denver production, whereas at first " ' The Birthday Party ' appears to be a straightforward story of a former working pianist now holed up in a decrepit boarding house ," in this play as in his other plays, " behind the surface symbolism ... in the silence between the characters and their words, Pinter opens the door to another world, cogent and familiar: the part we hide from ourselves "; ultimately, " Whether we take Goldberg and McCann to be the devil and his agent or simply their earthly emissaries, the puppeteers of the church-state apparatus, or some variation thereof, Pinter's metaphor of a bizarre party bookended by birth and death is a compelling take on this blink-of-an-eye we call life.

From 1962 to 1969, Harold Pinter had a clandestine affair with Joan Bakewell, which informs Pinter's play Betrayal.

In 1960 Pleasence won acclaim as the tramp in Harold Pinter's The Caretaker at the Arts Theatre, a part he would again play in a 1990 revival.

Like the world of Pinter's 1984 play One for the Road, the world of this play exposes the power of language ( Merritt 171 – 209 ; 275 ; Grimes 80 – 100 ).

Pinter's play may allude to political and cultural contexts of Great Britain in the 1980s headed by the Conservative Party of Margaret Thatcher, which, for example, forbade the television networks from broadcasting the voice of the leader of the Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams.

Amicus produced a 1968 film version of Harold Pinter's play The Birthday Party directed by William Friedkin.

He also played Ancient Pistol in Laurence Olivier's 1944 film of Henry V and Lukey in Carol Reed's Odd Man Out ; this performance was later immortalised in Harold Pinter's play Old Times.

Pearson appeared in a touring revival of Sir Peter Hall's production of Harold Pinter's Old Times in 2006, and in a production of Tom Stoppard's play Arcadia at the Duke of York's Theatre, London, in 2009.

Pinter's play The Homecoming has been described as a mid-twentieth-century " comedy of manners ".

But Spooner still remains in the house at the end of the play, " in no man's land ," along with Hirst ( and Foster and Briggs ), and the play ends in an impasse much like that of Pinter's 1960 play The Caretaker, to which critics compare No Man's Land.

Throughout her career Binoche has intermittently appeared on stage, most notably in a 1998 London production of Luigi Pirandello's Naked and in a 2000 production of Harold Pinter's Betrayal on Broadway for which she was nominated for a Tony Award.

A film adaptation of the novel was originally to be directed by Mike Nichols, from a script by Harold Pinter ; some of Pinter's script was used in the film, but, while Pinter was paid for his work, he asked to have his name removed from the credits, in keeping with his contract.

She is the daughter of Sheila ( née Laden ), now known as Sheila Hughes, a theatrical agent who was a longtime secretary at Harold Pinter's stage agency, and Roger Lloyd-Pack, a stage actor, well known as Trigger in the British hit sitcom Only Fools and Horses.

Harold Pinter's play The Room ( 1957 ) is a classic " kitchen sink " drama evoking the squalor and social depression of the bedsitting room culture of the time.

Losey realized three films from Pinter's screenplays, The Servant ( 1963 ), Accident ( 1967 ) and The Go-Between ( 1971 ), all of which have made a mark in the traditions of British, European, and American art house cinema.

He appeared with Jason Robards in the 1994 revival of Harold Pinter's No Man's Land and scored one of his greatest successes in 1997 in Barrymore, which he also toured with after a successful Broadway run.

Michael Billington, in a review published in The Guardian, endorsed Pinter's choice of ending, saying " by restoring Mamet's original ending, in which the professor is forced to confess his failings, Pinter also brings out the pain and tragedy of the situation.

Of course, both Stanley and Goldberg could just be inventing these apparent " reminiscences " as they both appear to have invented other details about their lives earlier, and here Goldberg could conveniently be lifting details from Stanley's earlier own mention of them, which he has heard ; as Merritt observes, the factual basis for such apparent correspondences in the dialogue uttered by Pinter's characters remains ambiguous and subject to multiple interpretations.
