Adam Warlock and his former Infinity Watch allies Gamora and Pip the Troll then recruited cosmically powerful beings from across the universe, intending to dethrone the Champion in the ring according to Skardon law, but the Champion managed to defeat all comers, including Drax the Destroyer, Gladiator, Beta Ray Bill, the Silver Surfer, and Adam Warlock himself.

He wakes up to find himself seemingly unharmed by the encounter and in the company of a pleasant individual named " Pip " who tells Rocky that he is his guide and has been instructed to grant him whatever he desires.

With the help of Pip the Troll, the assassin Gamora, and Gamora's employer, Thanos, Warlock discovers the Magus is himself from the future, driven insane by the use of his Soul Gem and the In-Betweener.

He keeps the soul gem for himself and gives one gem each to Pip, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Moondragon, and a reformed Thanos — the group being called the Infinity Watch.

Inside the Soul Gem was Soulworld, a place where Gamora, Pip and eventually Adam Warlock himself lived at peace.

Pip himself is caught after making trouble on dozens of planets, many controlled by the church.

Pip explored one of Thanos ' old hideouts and discovered not Adam, but Thanos himself.

Pip is spurred to create a new, ' super-heroic ' costume, but he fails to wash himself while changing.

After Pip receives an unexpected boon of a gentleman's upbringing and the " great expectation " of a future fortune from an unknown benefactor, he finds himself released from the blacksmith's apprenticeship that had been funded by Miss Havisham as compensation for Pip's years of service to her.

He also finds himself thrown into Estella's social milieu in London, where Pip goes to be educated as a gentleman.

Pip pursues her in a frenzy, often tormenting himself to the point of utter despair.

Billeted in a luxury manor, the pilots live well although one pilot, Moggy Cattermole, shows himself to be a vicious bully, singling out vulnerable characters Pip Patterson and Dicky Starr in particular.
