When in October 1761 Pitt, who had information of the signing of the " Family Compact " wished to declare war on Spain, and declared his intention to resign unless his advice was accepted, Granville replied that " the opinion of the majority ( of the Cabinet ) must decide ".

Pitt wished to discuss this with Fitzwilliam in person.

Cousin Joshua Dover decided to remain with the Reverend and poor Isaac Pitt until life passed away -- and he was hurt so badly he did not seem for long in this world.

The accomplished and politically well-connected naturalist Archibald Menzies complained that his servant had been pressed into service during a shipboard emergency ; sailing master Joseph Whidbey had a competing claim for pay as expedition astronomer ; and Thomas Pitt, 2nd Baron Camelford, whom Vancouver had disciplined for numerous infractions and eventually sent home in disgrace, proceeded to harass him publicly and privately.

These were slaughtered by government forces, but these rebellions convinced the British under Prime Minister William Pitt that the only solution was to end Irish independence once and for all.

Pitt is best known as the wartime political leader of Britain in the Seven Years War, especially for his single-minded devotion to victory over France.

From 1717 to 1721 Stanhope served as effective First Minister and was a useful political contact for the Pitt family until the collapse of the South Sea Bubble which engulfed the government.

Pitt was a leading advocate of a more hard-line policy against Spain, and often castigated Walpole's government for its weakness in dealing with Madrid.

Pitt incurred his lasting displeasure by attacking British support for Electorate of Hanover | Hanover, which would blight their relations for twenty years.

In 1744 Pitt received a large boost to his personal fortune when the Dowager Duchess of Marlborough died leaving him a legacy of £ 10, 000 as an " acknowledgment of the noble defence he had made for the support of the laws of England and to prevent the ruin of his country ".

Pitt and Henry Fox were considered the two favourites for the position, but Newcastle instead rejected them both and turned to the less well-known figure of Sir Thomas Robinson, a career diplomat, to fill the post.

Pitt continued at his post ; and at the general election which took place during the year he even accepted a nomination for the Duke's pocket borough of Aldborough.

In December 1756, Pitt, who now sat for Okehampton, became Secretary of State for the Southern Department, and Leader of the House of Commons under the premiership of the Duke of Devonshire.

Prime Ministers of the period included: William Pitt the Younger, Lord Grenville, Duke of Portland, Spencer Perceval, Lord Liverpool, George Canning, Lord Goderich, Duke of Wellington, Lord Grey, Lord Melbourne, and Sir Robert Peel.

He was one of the few prime ministers ( others include William Pitt the Younger, Sir Winston Churchill, George Canning, Spencer Percival, William Ewart Gladstone, Edward Heath, John Major, Tony Blair and Gordon Brown ) who never acceded to the peerage.

So when Canning decided to enter politics he sought and received the patronage of the leader of the " Tory " group, William Pitt the Younger.

In 1793, thanks to the help of Pitt, Canning became a Member of Parliament for Newtown on the Isle of Wight, a rotten borough.

The day after Canning wrote Lady Malmesbury: " I resign because Pitt resigns.

At the end of September 1801 Canning wrote to Frere, saying of Pitt: " I do love him, and reverence him as I should a Father – but a Father should not sacrifice me, with my good will.

In November Canning spoke out openly in support of Pitt in the Commons.

Canning replied by criticising the Addington government's foreign policy and claimed that the House should recognise the greatness of the country and Pitt, who ought to be its leader.

" In private Canning was fearful that if Pitt did not return to power, Fox would: " Sooner or later he must act or the country is gone.

After Pitt delivered a stinging attack on the government's defence measures on 25 April, Canning launched his own attack on Addington, which made Addington furious.

Canning returned to office in 1804 with Pitt, becoming Treasurer of the Navy.

After reading this letter Pitt summoned Canning to London for a meeting, where he told him that if he resigned it would open a permanent beach between the two of them as it would cast a slur on his conduct.

Canning eventually decided not to resign and wrote that " I am resolved to “ sink or swim ” with Pitt, though he has tied himself to such sinking company.

Canning left office with the death of Pitt ; he was not offered a place in Lord Grenville's administration.

Canning married Joan Scott ( later 1st Viscountess Canning ) ( 1776 – 1837 ) on 8 July 1800, with John Hookham Frere and William Pitt the Younger as witnesses.

With the country at war, Grenville aimed to form the strongest possible government and so included most leading politicians from almost all groupings, although some followers of Pitt, led by George Canning, refused to join.

After Pitt ’ s death he was one of the Pittite group led by Canning, Sturges Bourne and George Rose which held fortnightly dinners at White ’ s, and became a steward of the Pitt Club.

From his boyhood he had been a warm admirer of William Pitt the Younger, and along with Canning he entered heart and soul into the defence of his government, and contributed freely to the pages of the Anti-Jacobin, edited by Gifford.
