Proposals to drown the village of Capel Celyn in the Tryweryn valley in Gwynedd in 1957 to supply the city of Liverpool with water played a part in Plaid Cymru's growth.

Despite Plaid Cymru's ambivalence toward home rule ( as opposed to outright independence ) the referendum result led many in the party to question its direction.

Prior to his selection, Eurig Wyn had spent about a year building up a profile in Ynys Môn with a view to eventually taking the seat back from the Labour Party ( UK ), following Plaid Cymru's loss in 2001.

Llwyd is Plaid Cymru's Westminster parliamentary group leader.

Jones was the campaign director during Plaid Cymru's first elections to the Welsh Assembly in 1999.

The Act led to a great many more MEPs being returned from minor parties in the 1999 European elections, with more Liberal Democrats, along with the first European representatives for Plaid Cymru and the first national representatives for both the Green Party and the United Kingdom Independence Party.

Although Welsh is a minority language, and thus threatened by the dominance of English, support for the language grew during the second half of the 20th century, along with the rise of Welsh nationalism in the form of groups such as the political party Plaid Cymru and Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg ( Welsh Language Society ).

The split with Mebyon Kernow was down to the same debate that was occurring in most of the political parties campaigning for autonomy from the United Kingdom at the time ( for example the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru ), whether to be a centre-left party appealing to the electorate on a social democratic line, or whether to appeal emotionally on a centre-right cultural line.

The campaign was taken so seriously by Gwynfor Evans, former president of Plaid Cymru, that he threatened the government with a hunger strike were it not to honour the plans.

The 1982 Steve Martin comedy Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid was shot in black-and-white as a parody of a 1940s film noir and included footage of actors from the film-noir era such as Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, and others spliced in with the modern actors.

The party is a member of the European Free Alliance and has close links with Plaid Cymru, the Scottish National Party and the Breton Democratic Union.

The party has close links with Plaid Cymru ( their partner in the EFA ) including a twinning arrangement with Plaid's Blaenau Gwent branch, and to a lesser extent with the SNP.

The SNP retains close links with Plaid Cymru, its counterpart in Wales.

Gwynfor Evans ' presidency coincided with the maturation of Plaid Cymru ( as it now began to refer to itself ) into a more recognisable political party.

After one month of minority government, Morgan signed a coalition agreement ( One Wales ) with Ieuan Wyn Jones, leader of Plaid Cymru, on 27 June 2007.

The resignation of Harold Wilson brought James Callaghan to power, however his small majority was eroded with several by-election losses and the government became increasingly unpopular during the Winter of Discontent, although an arrangement was negotiated in 1977 with the Liberals known as the Lib-Lab pact and a succession of deals with the Scottish National Party and Plaid Cymru to hold referendums on devolution in exchange for their support, had helped to prolong the government's life.

It has informal links with Cymru X, the youth wing of Plaid Cymru.
