The pre-war French offensive plan, Plan XVII, was intended to capture Alsace-Lorraine following the outbreak of hostilities.

Early in the war, according to the directives of Plan XVII, the French mobilized and hurled their forces towards the German border in an ill-fated attempt to recapture Alsace-Lorraine.

With the revival of the army and a purge of " defensive-minded " officers he adopted the strategy devised by ( then ranked ) Général de corps d ' Armée Ferdinand Foch, the offensive known as Plan XVII.

The battles represented a collision between the military strategies of the French Plan XVII and the German Schlieffen Plan.
