The 1969 report of the Dearborn Campus Planning Study Committee, appointed by University Vice President for State Relations and Planning Arthur Ross to consider the future of the campus, recommended the addition of the first two years to become a full four-year institution and the expansion of non-coop programs ; it recommended other changes as well, most of which were implemented in 1971 to give the campus its present structure.

Among other major courses, areas of study include Legal Aspects of Sustainability, Environmental Communication, Sustainable Enterprise Planning, Sustainable Business Strategies, Energy and Environmental Techniques, Sustainability in the Natural Environment and Sustainability in the Build Environment.

Once established, the college began to grow and in 1957, the School of Architecture, Town Planning and Building was inaugurated and its first students were admitted in January, 1958, for professional courses in Architecture, Town Planning and Building.

Jacobs taught in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley from 1975 until 2001, teaching courses in city planning and urban design and serving twice as the department's chair.
