The American Planning Association has designated Haddon Avenue here as one of its 10 Great Streets for 2009. The group chose the street, which runs through Collingswood's business district, " for the way it melds the past with the present ".

The Town and Country Planning Association recently marked its 108th anniversary by calling for Garden City and Garden Suburb principles to be applied to the present New Towns and Eco-towns in the United Kingdom.

His mother, Ruth Hilda ( née Holmes ; 1916 – 1991 ), taught at an elementary school and was a liberal activist, while his father, Edmund Norwood Bacon ( May 2, 1910 – October 14, 2005 ), was a well-respected architect and a prominent Philadelphian who had been Executive Director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission for many years.

Planning for his enlistment, the family returned to Fort Worth in July 1956, and he re-enrolled in 10th grade for the September session at Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth, but quit in October to join the Marines ( see below ); he never received a high school diploma.

After he was discharged, in 1956 Foster won a place at the University of Manchester School of Architecture and City Planning.

Procedures established during the Truman administration set the basic bureaucratic pattern which lasted through the Dwight Eisenhower administration: draft NSC papers written primarily by State's Policy Planning Staff, discussion at the NSC meeting, approval by the President resulting in an NSC Action, and dissemination to relevant parts of the bureaucracy.

The NSC Planning Board met on Tuesday and Friday afternoons and was composed of officials at the Assistant Secretary level from the agencies with permanent or standing representation on the Council, as well as advisers from the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Central Intelligence Agency.
