Frederik Pohl, in his autobiography The Way the Future Was, said that the origins of the Futurians started with the Science Fiction League founded by Hugo Gernsback in 1934, the New York City local chapter of which was called the " Brooklyn Science Fiction League " or BSFL, and headed by G. G. Clark.

According to Pohl, in his autobiography The Way the Future Was, the Futurians held their own counter-convention which was attended by several who went to the regular convention.

At one point in the earliest 1940s, approximately half of all the pulp sf and fantasy magazines in the U. S. were being edited by Futurians: Frederik Pohl at the Popular Publications offshoot Fictioneers, Inc. ( Astonishing Stories and Super-Science Stories ); Robert Lowndes at Columbia Publications, most notably with Science Fiction and Future Fiction ( though through the decade to come, Lowndes's responsibilities would expand to other types of fiction magazine in the chain ), and Donald Wollheim at the very marginal Albing Publications with the short-lived, micro-budgeted Cosmic Stories and Stirring Science Stories ( Wollheim soon moved on to Avon Books ; Doë " Leslie Perri " Baumgardt also worked on a romance fiction title for Albing ).

The critic Richard Pohl, of the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, represented the progressive composers of the " Music of the Future ".

The stories all originally appeared in a number of different publications including the periodicals Dude, The Evening Standard, Lilliput, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Future, New Worlds, Startling Stories, Astounding, Fantasy, King's College Review, Satellite, Amazing Stories, London Evening News, Infinity Science Fiction and Ten Story Fantasy as well as the anthologies Star Science Fiction Stories No. 1 edited by Frederik Pohl and Time to Come edited by August Derleth.

Assistant Prosecutor Fred Lewis, who tried both the Hengesbach and Pohl cases, said he did not know what would be done about two arson charges pending against Pohl.

Pohl, commenting about that time, said " we four marched from Brooklyn to the sea, leaving a wide scar of burned out clubs behind us.

Pohl said as the conflicts between New Fandom and the Futurians were " Addicted to Feuds " and that " No CIA nor KGB ever wrestled so valiantly for the soul of an emerging nation as New Fandom and the Futurians did for science fiction ".

" Bob Pohl of The Buffalo News said, " pulls a number of short passages out of context and attempts to parse them for sense.

In the late 1930s, John W. Campbell became editor of Astounding Science Fiction, and a critical mass of new writers emerged in New York City in a group called the Futurians, including Isaac Asimov, Damon Knight, Donald A. Wollheim, Frederik Pohl, James Blish, Judith Merril, and others.

Latham remarks that this analysis by Harlan Ellison " obscures Ellison's own prominent role – and that of other professional authors and editors such as Judith Merril, Michael Moorcock, Lester Del Rey, Frederik Pohl, and Donald A. Wollheim – in fomenting the conflict, …"

Notable people attending included John W. Campbell, Isaac Asimov, L. Sprague de Camp, Ray Bradbury, Hannes Bok, Milton A. Rothman, John D. Clark, Jack Williamson, Frederik Pohl, Cyril Kornbluth, Donald A. Wollheim and Harry Harrison.

In addition to its groundbreaking role as the first of its kind, the convention was noteworthy for the exclusion of a number of politicized Futurians ( those excluded were Wollheim, Pohl, John Michel, Robert A. W. Lowndes and Jack Gillespie ) by convention chair Moskowitz, an event known to fannish historians as " The Great Exclusion Act.

Hence the group included supporters of Trotskyism, like Judith Merril and others who would have been deemed far left for the era ( Frederik Pohl became a member of the Communist Party in 1936, but later quit in 1939 ).

Pohl was unscrupulous and quickly exploited the companies for personal gain.

To this end, he compares George Orwell's Coming Up for Air with Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth's The Space Merchants and concludes that the basic building block and distinguishing feature of a science fiction novel is the presence of the novum, a term Darko Suvin adapts from Ernst Bloch and defines as " a discrete piece of information recognizable as not-true, but also as not-unlike-true, not-flatly-( and in the current state of knowledge ) impossible ".

R. Hilsch and R. W. Pohl in 1938 demonstrated a solid-state amplifier using a structure resembling the control grid of a vacuum tube ; although the device displayed power gain, it had a cut-off frequency of one cycle per second, too low for any practical applications, but an effective application of the available theory.

* The Last Theorem The 2008 book by Arthur C. Clarke and Frederik Pohl features the Depression as a location for an alien landing.

Examples: William Faulkner in A Rose for Emily ( Faulkner was an avid experimenter in using unusual points of view-see his Spotted Horses, told in third person plural ); Frank B. Gilbreth and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey in Cheaper By the Dozen ; Frederik Pohl in Man Plus ; and more recently, Jeffrey Eugenides in his novel The Virgin Suicides and Joshua Ferris in Then We Came to the End.

The Heechee in fact originated as a plot device enabling Pohl to give a plausible reason for humans to make the effort of colonizing the inhospitable planet that space probes have proven Venus to be.

When Gold's health worsened, Pohl took over as editor, starting officially at the end of 1961, though he had been doing the majority of the production work for some time.

However, Pohl never won the annual Hugo Award for his stewardship of Galaxy, winning three Hugos instead for its sister magazine, If.

After two years Frederik Pohl took over as editor, and it was under Pohl that If achieved its greatest success, winning the Hugo Award for best professional magazine three years running from 1966 to 1968.

Pohl, who had been intermittently helping Gold with editorial duties for some time prior to the car accident, is first listed as editor of If on the masthead of the November 1961 issue, and as editor of Galaxy for the December 1961 issue, but he had been acting as editor of both magazines for at least six months before the end of the year.

Pohl paid one cent per word for the stories he bought for If, whereas Galaxy paid three cents per word, and like Gold he regarded Galaxy as the leading magazine of the two, whereas If was somewhere he could work with new writers, and try experiments and whims.

When Pohl began his stint as editor, both magazines were operating at a loss ; despite Ifs lower budget Pohl found it more fun to edit, and commented that apparently the readers thought so too: he was able to make If show a profit before Galaxy, adding " What was fun for me seemed to be fun for them.

Shubik received copies of science fiction anthologies from British publishers and also sought advice from many authors including Frederik Pohl, Alfred Bester and Robert Silverberg.

In 1936, while working for Pohl, von Ohain earned a patent on his version of jet engines, Process and Apparatus for Producing Airstreams for Propelling Airplanes.

In February 1936, Pohl wrote to Ernst Heinkel telling him of von Ohain's design and its possibilities.

A more complete list would also include Bradbury's `` The Pedestrian '' ( 1951 ), Philip K. Dick's Solar Lottery ( 1955 ), David Karp's One ( 1953 ), Wilson Tucker's The Long Loud Silence ( 1952 ), Jack Vance's To Live Forever ( 1956 ), Gore Vidal's Messiah ( 1954 ), and Bernard Wolfe's Limbo ( 1952 ), as well as the three perhaps most outstanding dystopias, Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth's The Space Merchants ( 1953 ), Kurt Vonnegut's Player Piano ( 1952 ), and John Wyndham's Re-Birth ( 1953 ), works which we will later examine in detail.

How effectively these warnings can be presented is seen in Pohl and Kornbluth's The Space Merchants, Vonnegut's Player Piano and Wyndham's Re-Birth.

Rather what Kornbluth and Pohl are really doing is warning against the dangers inherent in perfecting `` a science of man and his motives ''.

Pohl and Kornbluth's ad men have long since thrown out appeals to reason and developed techniques of advertising which tie in with `` every basic trauma and neurosis in American life '', which work on the libido of consumers, which are linked to the `` great prime motivations of the human spirit ''.

-- A jury of seven men and five women found 21-year-old Richard Pohl guilty of manslaughter yesterday in the bludgeon slaying of Mrs. Anna Hengesbach.

Pohl received the verdict without visible emotion.

Pohl confessed the arson while being questioned about several fires in the Westphalia area by State Police.

Pohl could receive from 1 to 15 years in prison or probation.

A verdict against Pohl came at 4:05 p.m. after almost 13-1/2 hours of deliberation.

The cause of the conflict is uncertain, as the sources are divided ; the Lombard Paul the Deacon accuses the Gepids, while the Byzantine historian Menander Protector places the blame on Alboin, an interpretation favoured by historian Walter Pohl.

In the novel Man Plus by Frederick Pohl, an able-bodied astronaut, Roger Torraway, is surgically altered in order to augment his fragile human body and allow him to function in the harsh climate of Mars.

Marion Zimmer Bradley refers to him as " a second father ," Frederik Pohl calls him " a founder ," and Robert Silverberg says he was " seriously underrated " and " one of the great shapers of science-fiction publishing in the United States.
