" After receiving his degree in 1935, Ohain became the junior assistant of Robert Wichard Pohl, then director of the Physical Institute of the University.

Pohl also attended a navy school, and became paymaster on 1 April 1918 ; most of his time in the navy from then on was spent in Kiel.

One year later, in 1925, Pohl became a member of the SA, then finally joined the re-founded Nazi party on 22 February 1926 as member # 30842.

After the end of World War II in 1945, Pohl first hid in Upper Bavaria, then near Bremen.

From November 1942 until May 1944, Baer was adjutant of " SS-Obergruppenführer " Oswald Pohl, then chief of the Wirtschaftsverwaltungshauptamt ( SS office of economic policy ).

The cause of the conflict is uncertain, as the sources are divided ; the Lombard Paul the Deacon accuses the Gepids, while the Byzantine historian Menander Protector places the blame on Alboin, an interpretation favoured by historian Walter Pohl.

At one point in the earliest 1940s, approximately half of all the pulp sf and fantasy magazines in the U. S. were being edited by Futurians: Frederik Pohl at the Popular Publications offshoot Fictioneers, Inc. ( Astonishing Stories and Super-Science Stories ); Robert Lowndes at Columbia Publications, most notably with Science Fiction and Future Fiction ( though through the decade to come, Lowndes's responsibilities would expand to other types of fiction magazine in the chain ), and Donald Wollheim at the very marginal Albing Publications with the short-lived, micro-budgeted Cosmic Stories and Stirring Science Stories ( Wollheim soon moved on to Avon Books ; Doë " Leslie Perri " Baumgardt also worked on a romance fiction title for Albing ).

Walter Pohl, a leading pan-European expert on ethnicity and Late Antiquity, published a 1997 book titled Kingdoms of the Empire: The Integration of Barbarians in Late Antiquity.

Gold brought a " sophisticated intellectual subtlety " to magazine science fiction according to Pohl, who added that " after Galaxy it was impossible to go on being naive.

Pohl, who had been intermittently helping Gold with editorial duties for some time prior to the car accident, is first listed as editor of If on the masthead of the November 1961 issue, and as editor of Galaxy for the December 1961 issue, but he had been acting as editor of both magazines for at least six months before the end of the year.

The new editor was Ejler Jakobsson, though Pohl continued to be listed as editor emeritus on the masthead until the July – August 1970 issue.

In 1936, while working for Pohl, von Ohain earned a patent on his version of jet engines, Process and Apparatus for Producing Airstreams for Propelling Airplanes.

He compiled a detailed report on violations of religious freedom and invited Professor Reynaldo Pohl, the United Nations Special Representative to Iran, to visit the country and meet Protestant ministers and government officials to discuss these violations.

Pohl also noted that " Vance writes well -- sometimes even brilliantly ", but that his prose sometimes seemed uneven and artificial.

When Pohl began his stint as editor, both magazines were operating at a loss ; despite Ifs lower budget Pohl found it more fun to edit, and commented that apparently the readers thought so too: he was able to make If show a profit before Galaxy, adding " What was fun for me seemed to be fun for them.

The claim that Henry Sinclair explored North America has been popularised by several other authors, notably by Frederick J. Pohl, Andrew Sinclair, Michael Bradley, William S. Crooker ( who claimed to have discovered Henry Sinclair's castle in Nova Scotia ), Steven Sora, and more recently by David Goudsward.

Frederik Pohl, in his autobiography The Way the Future Was, said that the origins of the Futurians started with the Science Fiction League founded by Hugo Gernsback in 1934, the New York City local chapter of which was called the " Brooklyn Science Fiction League " or BSFL, and headed by G. By the late 1950s, Frederik Pohl was helping Gold with most aspects of the magazine's production.

After two years Frederik Pohl took over as editor, and it was under Pohl that If achieved its greatest success, winning the Hugo Award for best professional magazine three years running from 1966 to 1968.

Pohl paid one cent per word for the stories he bought for If, whereas Galaxy paid three cents per word, and like Gold he regarded Galaxy as the leading magazine of the two, whereas If was somewhere he could work with new writers, and try experiments and whims.

This developed into a selling point when a letter from a reader, Clayton Hamlin, prompted Pohl to declare that he would publish a new writer in every single issue of the magazine, though he was also able to attract well-known writers.

Much of the editorial work was actually done by Judy-Lynn Benjamin, who was hired by Pohl in 1969 as an editorial assistant.

He wrote after the war, " The Emperor did not wish for losses of this sort ... Orders issued by the Emperor ... after an audience with Pohl, to which I as usual was not summoned, to restrict the initiative of the Commander-in-Chief of the North Sea Fleet.
