Abdelaziz has condemned terrorism, insisting the Polisario's guerrilla war is to be a " clean struggle " ( that is, not targeting private citizens ' safety or property ); he however acknowledged mistreatment to Moroccan prisoners of war as well as attacking civilian populations in Moroccan cities by the polisario, justifying this as necessary evils in times of war and that the Polisario had to use every mean in order to defend the Sahrawi population from the enemy.

His position as Secretary-General was briefly assumed in an interim capacity by Mahfoud Ali Beiba, who was then replaced by Mohammed Abdelaziz at the Polisario's III General Popular Congress in August 1976.

The Polisario kept up the guerrilla war while they simultaneously had to help guard the columns of Sahrawi refugees fleeing, but after the air bombings by the Royal Moroccan Air Force on Polisario's camps in Umm Dreiga, Tifariti, Guelta Zemmur and Amgala, the Front had to relocate its headquarters to Tindouf ( western region of Algeria ).

Polisario's small army is considered incapable of covering the vast one-third of Western Sahara, east of the Moroccan military berm.

Moreover, most of Polisario's army is thought to be concentrated in the Tinduf area inside Algeria, safe from the long arm of Morocco's superior artillery and air force.

If passed it would be the first time in 16 years preparations for war have been part of the Polisario's strategy.

Mauritania, under its new government, immediately returned to the table to meet Polisario's goals, declaring full peace, a troop retreat, relinquishing their portion of Western Sahara and recognizing the Front as the Sahrawi people's sole representative.

At this point, Polisario's manpower included perhaps 800 men and women, but they were backed by a vastly larger network of supporters.

Additionally, many third world non-aligned countries have supported the Polisario Front, and later many reviewed their attitude and withdrew their recognitions of the Polisario's SADR.

Since 1997, the party has been supportive of the presidencies of Liamine Zeroual and Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and has participated in government.

Today the FLN is close to president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who has been made honorary chairman.

In April 2000, the Moroccan weekly newspaper Le Journal Hebdomadaire " crossed a political redline " by printing an interview with Abdelaziz, and was briefly banned from publishing.

Voted by the UMP majority, it was charged with advocating historical revisionism, and after long debates and international opposition ( from Abdelaziz Bouteflika or Aimé Césaire, founder of the Négritude movement ), was repealed by Jacques Chirac himself.

Abdelaziz of Morocco ( 24 February 1878 – 10 June 1943 ; ), also known as Mulai Abd al-Aziz IV, served as the Sultan of Morocco from 1894 at the age of sixteen until he was deposed in 1908.

For a brief period Abdelaziz reigned from Rabat while Abdelhafid reigned in Marrakech and Fes was disputed.

In Morocco, the young sultan Abdelaziz acceded in 1894 at the age of ten, and Europeans became the main advisors at the court, while local rulers became more and more independent from the sultan.
