Iggy Pop, the " godfather of punk "

In the December 1970 issue of Creem, Lester Bangs, mocking more mainstream rock musicians, ironically referred to Iggy Pop as " that Stooge punk ".

The first 12-page issue was produced as a fanzine for a local record label ' Anti-Pop records ' run by Arthur 2 Stroke and Andy ' Pop ' Inman, and went on sale for 20p ( 30p to students ) in The Gosforth Hotel Salters road, which hosted ' Anti-Pop ' punk gigs, and the run of 150 copies had sold out within hours.

The trio were ardent followers of the punk rock and post-punk music scene during the late 1970s and early 1980s and often performed impromptu sets or backing vocals at gigs for such bands as The Monochrome Set, Iggy Pop, The Jam, Department S and The Nipple Erectors.

Pop group Modern Romance started life as punk band The Leyton Buzzards, though they originated from Leyton in London rather than Bedfordshire.

As a teenager, Santiago became interested in computer programming, naming his first program " Iggy " and his second " Pop " after punk rocker Iggy Pop.

The music on the first album shows clearly the influence of punk, yet also incorporates funk and less-obvious influences of reggae and dub, similar to other bands at the time such as Public Image Ltd., Pere Ubu, and The Pop Group.

One year later, the band debuted their second single, " Dicknail " through Sub Pop Records.

Some tracks were composed using Eno and Peter Schmidt's Oblique Strategies cards: " Boys Keep Swinging " entailed band members swapping instruments, " Move On " used the chords from Bowie's early composition " All the Young Dudes " played backwards, and " Red Money " took backing tracks from " Sister Midnight ", a piece previously composed with Iggy Pop.

Devo caught the attention of David Bowie and Iggy Pop, who championed the band and enabled Devo to secure a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records.

According to critic Greil Marcus, the band, led by singer Iggy Pop, created " the sound of Chuck Berry's Airmobile — after thieves stripped it for parts ".

At the time, Finn was also the drummer in the band Love Battery, who had recently changed record labels from Sub Pop to Atlas Records, an A & M subsidiary.

" Clark Humphrey, editor of Desperate Times, cites this as the earliest use of the term to refer to a Seattle band, and mentions that Bruce Pavitt of Sub Pop popularized the term as a musical label in 1987 – 88, using it on several occasions to describe Green River.

Mudhoney, which was formed by former members of Green River, served as the flagship band of Sub Pop during their entire time with the label and spearheaded the Seattle grunge movement.

In December, the Airplane played at the Altamont Free Concert at Altamont Speedway in California, thus becoming the only band to perform at all three of the iconic rock festivals of the 1960s: Altamont, Monterey Pop and Woodstock.

After a number of live shows in 1988, the band released their first single, " Dust Cake Boy ", through Sub Pop records ' singles club in 1989.
