He went on to star in such popular films as Shadow of a Doubt ( 1943 ), Duel in the Sun ( which remains one of the top 100 highest grossing films of all time when adjusted for inflation ), Love Letters ( 1945 ), Portrait of Jennie ( 1948 ) and The Third Man ( 1949 ).

All his known portraits of Mary I appear to be variants of a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery, London () which is signed ' HE ' and dated 1554 at the top left.

Four of the National Portrait Gallery paintings are currently ( December 1997 ) on display: John Burns, Sir William Huggins, Thomas Huxley ( the artist's father in law ) and Charles Darwin ( copies of the last two are also prominently displayed at the top of the staircase at the Athenaeum Club in London ).

At the time of sale, it was one of the top two most expensive artworks ever sold, together with van Gogh's Portrait of Dr. Gachet, which was also purchased by Saito.

This form of the imperial mitre-crown can be seen in the extant portraits of such emperors as Frederick III and Maximilian I The bronze effigy of Maximilian I found on his monumental cenotaph in the court church in Innsbruck has a crown with two arches which cross over the top of the mitre and the unique form of the imperial crown adopted by Maximilian as Emperor of Mexico: File: X-Large Portrait of Maximiliano. jpg appears to have been modeled on this form, but with the half-arches and the eagles on the circlet on the front, back and sides of the imperial crown of Napoleon III.

In the Arnolfini Portrait ( 1434 ), Jan van Eyck uses an image reflected in a mirror in a manner similar to Velázquez in Las Meninas.

The painting is likely to have been influenced by Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait, of 1434.

First in a 1934 article, then in his Early Netherlandish Painting, Panofsky was the first to interpret Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait ( 1434 ) as not only a depiction of a wedding ceremony, but also a visual contract testifying to the act of marriage.

Panofsky made important contributions to the study of iconography, including his interpretation of Jan van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait ( 1434, pictured ).

Whereas most icongraphical scholarship remains highly dense and specialized, some analyses began to attract a much wider audience, for example Panofsky's theory ( now generally out of favour with specialists ) that the writing on the rear wall in the Arnolfini Portrait by Jan van Eyck turned the painting into the record of a marriage contract.

Artwork produced during the Middle Ages shows, among the more fashionably dressed, possibly the most spectacular straw hats ever seen on men in the West, notably those worn in the Arnolfini Portrait of 1434 by Jan van Eyck ( tall, stained black ) and by Saint George in a painting by Pisanello of around the same date ( left ).

This is supported by records of an inscription from Ovid's Ars Amatoria, which was on the now-lost original frame of the Arnolfini Portrait, and by the many Latin inscriptions in van Eyck paintings, using the Roman alphabet, then reserved for educated men.
